Family TV

Ok, I must admit it. I watch American Idol and it premiers tonight on Fox. Hey American Idol may be the only show we can sit down as a family and watch. We sure can’t sit down and watch anything on …. VH1 for example. Just the commercials on MTV are crazy. Forget about the movie channels and there’s no chance I’m watching Sponge Bob after a long day of work. The only show that actually engages every member of the household from young to old and I think that is a reason behind it’s smash success.

With anything else we find ourselves having to turn the channel after a 5 min. stretch if you get that far into it before something happens on screen that has us scrambling for the remote. So here we are, another season of Simon, Randy and Paula. The bad part about it is the radio is the same way.

Hey there’s nothing wrong with American Idol. My son and I watch it. Tonight we plan on popping some popcorn and laughing our heads off. With the writer’s strike, I’m looking forward to something refreshing.

Kim, do you stick with the entire season? Or just the beginning and the finals?

I luvvvvvvvvvvvvv New York!.. But my husband is right..it is not appropriate for the kids ( in fact, it is not appropriate for me.) It is like a guilty pleasure.

My son is only two so he doesn’t watch anything but Thomas The Train, but my wife and I love Idol.

By the way, bless y’all for starting this site. I was beginning to think that me being black and married with kids made me nearly extinct!

    Peace.

  • in my opinion

Hey people try this. Instead of changing the channel, TURN IT OFF! TV time and the family… Where is the family interaction? Since you won’t watch sponge bob do the kids go to a different tv in another room or are the forced to watch what YOU want to watch? Why not take the time after work and play a game, read a book make dinner together? Why is tv time considered family time? Watch tv after the kids go to bed. Even sponge bob can dull a brain cell or two….

With us pretty much from the time I get home till the time the kids go to bed is family time so everything in between counts as such. What we do is try to find something in between such as American Idol that we can all enjoy. We play games, we read plenty of books with our reading age daughter who we’re proud to say brought home a note saying she was reading a grade and a half past her expected level :-) , eat dinner together and all of that. But hey it is 2008 the kids want to watch the boob tube before they go to bed and guess what I do to. Balance is the key to life and I don’t think theres anything wrong with TV being in that balance, I just wish there were more options for the entire crew to enjoy.
