I know some people who have been “playing house,” with kids, for years, now under the auspices of a common law marriage. I feel like this, if you have many of the trappings of marriage but none of the commitment, then who is benefitting and/or not benefitting from the arrangement? Oftentimes, it’s the woman putting all of her cards on the table, while the man … as old-school as it sounds … gets his milk, cheese and eggs for free!”

I think a question that is often not asked in these types of situations is “Why Do You Want to Get Married”. Marriage is great but I think its important that people tell each other what their view of marriage is. From what I can see she’s married in everything but name, so I’m wondering is it for religious reasons, for the legal security of marriage, or some other reason. I think that if she talks to her significant other both she and he will know what the others view of marriage is and they will be able to figure out what the hang up is.
