A Raisin In The Sun - Review

HER VIEW
Overall, I enjoyed the TV adaptation of the movie. I don’t think that Diddy “nailed it” …..but he was not awful either. Phylicia Rashad, Sanaa Lathan and Aurdra McDonald were excellent!! Sanaa did an excellent job with her character, Beneatha, who longs for better things out of life and wants to make a real difference in the world.
The New York Times says Diddy was commanding and fierce. Do you agree..do you think he nailed it?
HIS VIEW
Excellent movie - except…. Good ole Walter Lee AKA Diddy, AKA Puffy, AKA Puff Daddy, AKA you get the point. This is no hate job, I actually like Diddy, he’s a heck of an entrepreneur with the clothing and fragrance line, I like the music he puts out, me and the wife even watch his Making The Band show that comes on MTV but… Walter Lee didn’t get it last night.
At one point the scene was so good I had an anxiety about him coming into it to mess it up. That may be harsh but it’s how I felt. Everytime I would see him do a major scene I would be playing it back in my mind with another actor doing it and thinking how they could make it seem more realistic. How about Derek Luke down on his knees telling his mama he was gonna sell the house to the man? What about going older with Clifton Powell? He would have nailed it too. Overall a good movie but they could have left Diddy home instead of trying to get the buzz factor. I saw on another site someone said especially how good he was. Let me know what you thought.

I really enjoyed watching A Raisin in the Sun, however, I disagree with the New York Times. I don’t think that Diddy nailed the role, but like the Mom said, I don’t think he was horrible either. I also agree that the role could have been better played by another actor. With that said, it might not have gotten as much attention with another actor playing the part of Walter. I loved the other actors and Phylicia Rashad was absolutely wonderful.

You know I was dreaming when I walked into it and I saw a Nigerian guy from my hometown teaching Audra some Yoruba. My language. The only thing they twisted there was the name he gave her. Alayo. That really means “one who is always happy.” In the show he called it “one who always thirst for more.” Anyhow, great fierce acting for Diddy like the NYT said.

You’re right. Diddy didn’t come close to matching the intensity of the other actors…particularly Phylicia Rashad. I couldn’t catch my breath in that scene where she let out that cry when she found out the money was gone. At times I felt like he was just reciting lines. He wasn’t believable as struggling and down and out. He doesn’t know what that is anymore. Also, his hair cut was too precise and neat. I know that’s minor but it bothered me.
The Tony nods got it right.
Excellent suggestions on other actors to play Walter Lee. I could definitely have see Derek Luke in that role.

After watching Diddy’s first scene in the movie, all I could say was, “Oh no”. I’m sorry, but his acting was horrible! A few of my friends called me b/c I was anticipating the show for months, and alot of them did mention the fact that they thought so many other actors could have done better. But the veterans nailed their roles!
