BMWK Review – UniverSoul Circus

My father, sister, and I took the kids (my kids and my nieces) to the UniverSoul Cricus here in Maryland on Friday. This is the 4th time we have been to the UniverSoul Circus in the last six years. And of course, the kids had a great time. They enjoyed listening and dancing to the latest Hip Hop Music. The dance contests are always a favorite with the kids. They enjoyed the circus acts and of course the ring master.. who kept the crowd hype in much the same manner that a DJ would at a concert.

I thought the circus was totally RAD!! And RAD does not stand for Radical (as the kids say.) For me, R.A.D means Raggedy and DANGEROUS!!! Unlike the kids, I was less than impressed with this circus. As I stated before, we have been to this circus 4 times in the last 6 years. And the only thing that is changing about the circus is the price!!! The price is going up and the quaility is going down. For instance, the seats were falling apart. My 6 year old daughter gets up to dance and her chair just falls down into the row of seats behind her. Our toddler knocks the person’s seat in front of her with her foot and that person’s chair falls to the ground. We purchased 10 tickets and we litterally only had 8 working seats!! Luckily that night, there were many other empty seats to choose from.. But when I was in line, a man was purchasing tickets for Saturday night and the box office lady said that Saturday night was almost sold out. So I am thinking there are going to be a lot of unhappy people on Saturday night when they find out they have to sit in broken seats!! Also, they made me buy seats for my toddler..which I thought was unusual. Most of the time kids 2 and under can get in free. But nooooo…not at the UniverSoul Circus. So even though my little girl is only 19 months old ..I had to purchase a ticket for her. BUT THE KICKER is, that those bleachers are sooooo RAGGEDY and Dangerous…..that no responsible parent would allow their toddler to sit in a seat alone. There is a huge space between the seat and the floor boards that any kid under four would easily fall through and could potentially get seriously injured. Instead of selling tickets to toddlers..they should require that all parents have to hold on to their toddlers.

Another thing that pissed me off was those Porta-Potties. There is no way to make a Porta-Potty nice….so you already know how gross that was just by me merely mentioning Porta-Potty. As we were walking in, I thought those kids better have used the bathroom before we left home. But with seven kids, you know that one of them was going to have to use it. And sure enough.. my six year old daughter starts squirming in her seat. At first I try to ignore it….like maybe she is just dancing. But nooooooooo, she had to go and she said those dreaded words.. Mommy I have to go to the bathroom. So I take her to the bathroom and of course it is dark inside that Porta-Potty. There is no light in there. And of course I have to lift my daughter into the air so that she can use the bathroon without touching the seat. But guess where her pee went…. Yes, you guessed it.. on my foot!!! So instead of waiting in line to get into that dark stinky Porta-Potty, I should have just took her to a corner and said please just pee on my foot.

So we get back to our seats and I remind all of the kids: Please hold on to your shoes because they can fall to the ground. As soon as I sat down, my neice says: “Aunt Ronnie…my shoe fell!!” So I go down to the bottom of the bleachers and over to the side where a few ushers were standing and I try to explain to them that we lost a shoe. Well I guess this is a normal occurance becasue that was their job…to retrieve stuff from under those raggidy ass bleachers. So your Circus is sooo raggedy that you invent a job!!!! Instead of upgrading…you hire folks to search under the bleachers in the dark to retrieve stuff!! Wowwww!! Anyway, those guys could not speak English very well. So the first time he went under, he came back with a baby bottle and I said …nooo …I need a shoe. He went under again and came back empty handed. He told me: “I can’t find it….you look!” At first I was like there is no way I am going under those dark bleachers with you…but lucklily there were other people like me waiting to find things. So we all went under the bleachers in the dark to find our lost items. I finally found the lost shoe. And went back to sit with my family. By this time you can imagine how my own feet were looking. They were already wet from the bathroom incident and then I had to walkround in the dirt under those dark dusty bleachers. Needless to say, I will not be wearing those sandals anymore.

Now might you say, you are just critisizing the venue…what about the actual show?? Well the few circus acts that they had were entertaining. They had this one Asian group of tumblers that were GREAT!!! However, they did had too many “filler” or “time wasting” type activities. For instance, between acts the Ring Master would shout: “When I say Big Top, you say Circus,” …”Big Top” and the crowd would shout: “Circus.” And then the ringmaster would shout “Big Top, Big Top” and the crow would shout: “Circus, Circus.” This went on for far too long. Also, they had a dance contest, a soul train line, an old school vs. new school sing off and a variety of other activities that required crowd participation. I think those type of activities are a part of the appeal for UniverSoul Circus. But it is far too much of that stuff and not enough of the actual circus acts. And by the way, there were NO CLOWNs this year. I thought maybe I missed the clowns while I was in that Porta- Potty or while I was searching in the dark for that shoe. But no, my sister said there were no clowns. Now what type of circus has no clowns!!

This year, I definitely will not give the UniverSoul Circus a high rating. Out of 5… I would give them a 2. If you have never been to the UniverSoul Circus, I think you would enjoy it…because the first time you experience it is always the best. But if you are a repeat visitor, then I don’t think they will have anything new or entertaining to offer you.

My daughter turns two next month and we are thinking about taking her but I’m also 8 1/2 months pregnant and CANNOT do porto pottys under ANY circumstance.

I went once as a kid but haven’t been in literally 15 years or so. I still think it’s a great idea for kids of color to get the experience, even if it is a little overpriced.

Jerises last blog post..What’s Seasonal Where You Live?

Jersie, congrats on the new baby.

We as parents want to continue our family traditions. Too bad it is overpriced, under staffed and full of germs. lol.

When a person speaks about a situation or experience it shows their overall attitude towards the subject or just in general. What kind of example are you for your children to follow? Your overall attitude is one of negativity. If UniverSoul Circus was so bad and overpriced as you stated; why do you pay the price year after year. It’s apparent that you had another agenda or reason for going? Do the people who enjoy this show and gets something from it a favor and stay away. You can keep your comments and opinion to yourself. I bet your children would beg to differ from you concerning that show. I pray that you’re not just another lonely person who needs people to give you some attention by responding to you. May God Bestow Some Happiness Into Your Life!!

I have to agree with you on this “circus”. I live in MD, as well, and went a few years ago. Like you said, the kids enjoyed it but i thought it was horrible. At least when I went, they had one clown :) But they did not have a lot of animals and I thought it was more a regular show than a circus. I was not impressed and have not been back. My whole thing is that if you are having a circus, have a circus..don’t just expect people to come because you are catering to African Americans..do it right not halfway. Well, at least I know the kids and I are not missing anything in the parking lot *lol*

by definition, both the circus and the county fair are not the cleanest, sturdiest, or most sanitary of situations. it comes with the territory. that does not mean that you have to accept those kind of conditions.

bmwk is not in the habit of ‘hating’ so i take it at face value when they say that the circus left something to be desired.

if you want a different circus experience, i would check out cirque du soleil (some of their shows are a bit risque, so check carefully) or look for some of the asian acrobats that come to town.

Just me – I agree, I think a lot of black businesses get by because they are just that, black businesses and they cater to an underserved market but you really should be providing me with something other than that.

Mom of 3- Thanks we appreciate the love

Kim h20s- I know you commented on the original post but i’m responding here. I wanted to check out Cirque when we were in Vegas a few years back but didn’t get the chance. I hear that is the gold standard. We went to Ringling Bros. last year and even that was a disappointment to me from when I was a kid. I didn’t know they had gotten rid of the three rings… Is it really Ringling Bros. without the three rings?

  • kim h20s

@ Dad – the circus is a relic of a bygone era. between a new focus on animal rights and changing consumer tastes, the circus is about as relevant as a taffy pull.

@bmwk just my 02 cents, i’m not crazy about the CommentLuv which parses my last blog. luckily i disabled the comment button. i sign all my blogs with my real name, but this is a family blog and some of my blog comments (on other site) are definitely more mature.

  • http://www.blackandmarriedwithkids.com TheDad

kim h20s – sorry about that, i love it because it gives the person an opportunity to effortlessly spotlight their own blog. A lot of times I’d like to talk about some of the other blogs I read and what I like about them but never seem to find the time to share. Also I think it’s a motivator for some to comment who wouldn’t normally.

I fully understand why you choose not to use it though, If the option to not enable it was not there I wouldn’t offer it. Thanks for the feedback. I always wonder about stuff like that.

I totally agree…this was my first time going and I was disappointed. I went to the USC in Oakland Ca, it was a rainy and muddy day. People had to trek in through mud and walk on wooden pallets just to get to their seats.
With two 3 year-olds that’s outrageous! We had to walk through huge mud puddles with large patches of water every 3 to 4 feet…it was so bad even the concession stand had flooded. I don’t know why they didn’t plan for this…we brought umbrellas. There’s was homedepot not far away…
However, let me just talk about the show. I couldn’t believe the crowd participation portion of the circus…it was like they charged me to entertain myself. Folks could have stayed in the parking lot and had a soul train line for free.
I was sadden by the lack of animals and actual circus activities. I did enjoy the Asia acrobats, the 2 young contortionist and the young men from South Africa as well. But the clowns need to study their craft…take it serious. My nephew did enjoy it but the other 3 year old was ready to go after the first 3 acts. Bottom line, maybe the USC can work on improving some of these things. It just seems to be poor planning. Good things is that it fixable.

PS…And I too had to look for our 3 year-old’s glow stick underneath the bleachers. It was dark and funky, lol.

We have never be there. But now I have a better understanding, we are thinking of planning are next trip there.

    OK,
I am a firm believer in reading reviews before attending an event. So when the circus came to town, I read the reviews posted above. (Not trying to be mean but) I’m glad I didn’t listen and not go. I had a WONDERFUL time. (No, I don’t work for them.LOL) I decided to take my 6 year old during the week to cut down on the massive weekend crowd. Good decision. When we got there I figured that there would be quite a line at will call but surprisingly there wasn’t. We went thru the “food” tent first, little chaotic but that’s what you would expect. There was a little bit of a wait to get to our seats but the attendant was very nice when directing us. It’s April and still pretty cool here so we took jackets, we did not need them at all. Under the tent it’s pretty hot. My busy 6 year old who was determined to bring her sunglasses dropped them under the bleachers as soon as we sat down. Now, I was dreading this because of what the person wrote about on the first posted review. Since I knew I wasn’t going under the bleachers to get the sunglasses I just told her “they’re gone now” and left it at that. WELL, what do you know! Here comes the same attendant that seated us, carrying the sunglasses! I didn’t even have to ask. (Circus 1 – Review 0) So, here is my rundown:

FOOD/TOYS, etc: WAY overpriced! $8 for a hotdog, $4 for a 20 ounce soda, $6 popcorn, $15 for a “dollar store” toy that broke on the way home?! But you have to expect that so that wasn’t too much of a surprise. I will say the clown going around taking pictures and vendors walking during the show was a distraction. They would stand right in front of you while you’re trying to watch. I paid $50 for 1 adult and 1 child ticket…umm, I thought was a bit much especially since my expectations were so low but I sucked it up and paid anyway( what are u gonna do)

BLEACHERS: weren’t the sturdiest but I didn’t feel like it was a death trap. But, there is a gap where a small child (if unattended) could fail thru but they would have to crawling around on the ground, and yes that is dirty (but hello, it is the ground)

ATMOSPHERE: It’s a CIRCUS so…yes it’s loud, yes it’s hot, but I didn’t need to see an audiologist afterwards. It added to the whole circus experience. The MUSIC was a mixture of both old and new school. They played music from Frankie Beverly, Salt-N-Pepa, and a few rap artists from today. Nothing vulgar or had cursing.

THE SHOW: The ringmaster Tony Tone was great. He kept the crowd hype and all the kids and adults around me loved the back and forth chants. The loudest part of the show is seeing who’s section was the hypest. BUT you were supposed to be loud on that part. The basketball act was first, entertaining certainly not you’re ‘typical’ act you would expect to see in a circus, but oh well. They did the “AND 1″ type of thing. My daughter LOVED the dog show, but I thought the acrobats were the best. They pulled 5 men and women from the audience for the soul train line. Now, THAT was funny! The people that were selected were older so it didn’t have any crawling around on the ground or booty popping. The kids dance contest….I was a little disappointed. The had selected 5 kids before hand to go in the ring to participate instead of asking for volunteers, my 6 year old was upset, that more kids couldn’t join they turned them away. I feel like the soul train line could be done away with to allow more time for the kids to participate. (but I’m a lil salty cause MY baby didn’t have her chance, so that’s my own little vice) LOL. Now it’s intermission and * horror music starts* time for the…..
PORTA POTTY: Well, well, well. As porta potties go they weren’t half bad. I really like the fact that they had a hand sanitizer stand with paper towels. Not the Ritz, but not a backwoods gas station either.

THE ELEPHANT RIDES: YES $10 was way too much and the smell…well brace you may want to brace yourself or step outside until it’s all done. That way you don’t have to smell OR SEE it. YES, there’s a guy that follows the elephants around with a trash can and “catches” the poo. SUCKS to be him! But hey…you gotta go, you gotta go. ***Side note: while watching the elephants trot people around my daughters looks to me and says” Mommy, the elephant’s eyes look sad” and while I didn’t pay attention to this at first ( I was concentrating on breathing and not letting the smell get in my mouth) I also noticed that they DID look sad. Very sad.
The rest of the show went on pretty nice. The tigers, well ONE tiger in particular wasn’t feeling the trainer this evening. He had that look like ” come over here with that whip if you want to, you gon’ leave one limb short” but luckily the trainer got the hint and kept it moving. With that said. I WOULD NOT have liked box seats; you are just WAY to close to the action. And with elephant poop and testy tigers it may not have made for a good evening. They also had time for a “guest” ringmaster and in this case it was a local pastor who used his time at the mic to pray for all the kids and parents in attendance. I REALLY loved that! The only other thing I can comment on is how the performers got the crowd “hype” It was a little disturbing sitting there with my six year old daughter and have bare chest men gyrate and thrust their pelvis in your face, raising the roof for the crowd to get more involved. I used that time to ask how she enjoyed the show and made sure she was watching me and not “chocolate thunder” warming up the crowd. (And quite a few of the ladies were really warm)
SO to sum up my experience I would have to say that all in all I LOVED it and can not wait to go back next year. Even though I may have to take out a small loan to afford going. LOL
    God Bless!
