BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Former “American Idol” Ruben Studdard is getting ready for a weekend wedding in his home state of Alabama.

Studdard, nicknamed the “Velvet Teddy Bear” on “Idol” for his big frame and sonorous voice, will marry Surata Zuri McCants, his girlfriend of two years, at the Canterbury United Methodist Church in Mountain Brook on Saturday.

He met his bride-to-be during a CD-signing at a Wal-Mart store in Atlanta in October 2006. The 29-year-old singer says he was struck by McCants’ beauty and later tracked her down in the toy department and asked for her telephone number.

Studdard is set to release a new album later this year.

Congrats to them. Some ppl forget that he won American Idol to Clay Aiken. Ruben's management are not representing him well. I am going to let it slide. the fact that he (Ruben) and his soon to be bride met at a signing at Walmart. I have only shopped at Walmart when a kid leaves for college. Great prices for a mini fridge and all the things you need for their dorm. Ruben is working on a new cd and I know it will be good. Just hope that his management promotes it so I don't forget it is out.

Wonderful wedding. We hear there were 20 Groomsmen and they met in the Toy Department of Walmart after she got her CD signed and left. Reuben followed her to the Toy isle to get her #!!! GOD IS GOOD!
