The Effects Of High Gas Prices… Funny Looking Cars

23 July 2008 112 views 11 Comments

One of the most noticeable effects of high gas prices, or at least in the DC area is the shear growth in numbers of … UGLY CARS! Now I’m not trying to offend any of you if you own one of these monstrosities, you know we love our readers but… I don’t know how you do it. I know gas is expensive and these are more “Green”, they’re good for the economy, you’re reducing your carbon footprint etc. etc. etc… but let’s face it, your ride is ooogly and not to mention just the look, those things can’t be safe. In DC these small Smart Cars are all the rage but theres just two feet between the front seat and the outside of the car. What happens in a rear impact? I’ve been hit from behind softly while driving a sedan and my back got stiff the next day, what will happen in that thing? TheDad himself turned in his Expedition a year ago and got a hybrid (on the condition that I could find one that looked like a regular car - and I did) and I sing the praises of how much money I save all of the time but like the show that spent a season on BET… “We Got To Do Better”

Editor’s Note - If you have any kids, one of these are not even an option

I live in California…gas is $4.44 a gallon. Yes, I drive an “ugly” car. My friends who drive the “beautiful” cars laugh at me…until I tell them I get 33 MPG…and my insurance is very low…and I my car held up better in a traffic accident than their car did (my car had minor damage, the “beautiful” car was in the shop for over a week).
Why do we put so much emphasis on an item that inherently goes down in value? What about the people who haven’t painted their house in a zillion years? Now that is ugly.

I wish I could get one of the ooogly gas saving vehicles….but with 3 kids (2 in carseats), I’m sure it would be most uncomfortable.

it is the utility and not the looks lol

A car being ugly was not a problem when i was coming up, you were just lucky if you had a car. With the price of gas we all just might have to look a little crazy out there. All you have to do if your parents have one of the funny cars is to ride in the floor like my kids did when their dad had a clunker that he still loved when it was twenty years old.

Yes the cars are ugly. Ultimately, you have decided between vanity and economy. To me, ugly cars are hilarious. I would never laugh at a person for choosing to buy such a vehicle though, because its a great idea. Whenever I can, I’ll be the proud owner of an “ugly car”. Then, I’ll be happy to be the butt of any jokes offered buy people driving gas-guzzlers.

@ MS. HM - you can hang it up, those cars are definitely not for those of us with car seats.

@ anonymous - funny looking car does not have to = good mileage. They can make those cars look like whatever they want. I think there’s some wierd association with them that if a car looks like that it must be so efficient. There are plenty of examples of small cars they were making before the gas crunch that were good looking and in the same price range.

I’m like a dude about a car. I bought my roadster because of it’s speed, engine size and agility. I love the sound of my car when I turn the ignition and the way it hugs the curves and moves adroitly through traffic. I’ve never owned a car with an automatic transmission because I like to be in control of my vehicle at all times. But my love of driving also extends to the way my car looks. I like to see the chrome shine on my baby. I love to put the top back and put my shades on.

My husband? He could drive that car you posted cause all he wants is to get from point A to point B in the most cost and time efficient way possible.

Oops. That’s ITS speed, no apostrophe.
