Fast and Healthy Eating For The Kids

Yesterday we ran a story out of LA where the City Council has just passed a law banning any new fast food restaurants from opening up for at least the next year. The law was aimed at encouraging sit down restaurants with healthier menus to open in the area. Well as one of our readers Teems put it, “they need to work more on businesses with healthy-fast food” because sitting down is not always an option. This can’t be more true than when you’re running around with the kids, don’t have time to cook, but don’t necessarily want to fill up their little bellies with grease and fat. Well it seems like one of the big fast food companies has gotten it right. We were notified that Burger King has a new 350-calorie BK Kids Meal which includes Kraft Mac n Cheese, low-fat milk, and new BK Fresh Apple Fries and asked to try them.

TheMom and I have had the discussion in the past about feeding the kids too much fast food with child obesity rates being out of control so we were more than open to find out more about this healthier option. Well BMWK family, we definitely wouldn’t promote anything that we didn’t like and lets just say that since our initial taste test :-) we’ve returned several times, including as recently as Tuesday on our trip back into town. Our kids are fans of the Kraft Mac n Cheese, they prefer chocolate milk and the BK Fresh Apple Fries could inspire a post of their own. Now I know some of you are asking what in the world is an apple fry? Well its an apple that’s shaped like a French Fry which A.) Makes it easy for them to handle and B.) Makes it kinda cool too. It even comes with low fat caramel that looks like a ketchup packet.

Now since we’ve revisited this meal several times we’ve established some guidelines:

  • If you don’t eat your Mac N Cheese fast enough TheDad will start on it for you to make sure it tastes ok ;-)
  • TheDad may be the families largest fan of Apple Fries. We all love them but… being TheDad and all I place a premium on these. Basic rule of thumb is that I may get my own pack of Apple Fries but in addition to mine I’ll get to eat one out of every three from your pack also.
  • Our two year old took a second to warm up to the idea of that brown stuff on her apple (Caramel) but once I finally got her to taste it, now she’s hooked and wouldn’t have it any other way.
  • TheMom has perfected the art of caramel placement on our apple fries. She’s the G. Garvin of apples.

The new 350-Calorie BK Kids Meal gets the BMWK stamp of approval. Try it out tonight, you might be surprised.

I also look for healthier alternatives in fast food, and the apple fries are a personal favorite of mine too. I didn’t even use the caramel sauce.

Thank you for encouraging and supporting Black Family life. You are a great example of what it is to be Black in America.

My daughter really likes the Apple fries and the Mac and Cheese. I think it is a great alternative. I was so excited about the Mac and Cheese because my son doesn’t really eat fries. It turns out he doesn’t like the Mac and Cheese, for some reason he only like Chef Boyardee Mac and Cheese and he doesn’t eat fruit, so the apple fries are out. I constantly offer fruit like but he always says no, he eats applesauce every once in a while :) So at least it is working for one child:) I have to try the Apple Fries for myself.

@Nicole – be warned, you may want to try your own order of apple fries, I’d hate for a fight to break out between you and your daughter cause mommy ate all of her fries :-) They are good, now you’ve got me thinking about them again. They come juicy too, not all dried out.

I wish these options were around when my son was younger and myself for that matter. I remember when my mother called herslef making burgers better than Mickey D’s. The end result is a thick round piece of meat with a slice of that block of cheese thrown on top and in the middle is a visible pink circle thanks to the ketchup, which has soaked thru the two slices of wonder bread which is too big for the burger anyway (i know i ain’t the only one to remember that: ) …Not that it wasn’t good – however, this was a far cry from the original and i vowed to never torture my child like that….LOL. But the fast food thing is a easy trap to fall into, we refrained from my son eating too much fast food, but it can be hard when you’re always on the go. So it can sometimes be easier and cheaper to go to the drive thru so you have to catch yourself before it becomes habit forming, so this is definitely a good option by BK…..We love the apple fries as well, and for the record i have cut up plenty a apple in my day, but i was politely told that mine never looked or tasted like the BK ones.

Your comment had me laughing out loud. We have all lived thoough the wonder bread with the oversized greasy burger our moms called a burger. LOL. My dad use to say “If it were not for a can opener we would have starved”. Needless to say we loved when it was dads night to cook. Nothing like fried chicken with some rice and gravy and biscuits to sop it up with.
