Black and Missing, Inc. - Making A Difference

This morning as I was flipping through the morning radio programs I heard a familiar voice on The Russ Parr show. It was Derrica Wilson who I met a few months back at my daytime gig. She runs a fantastic website called Black and Missing, Inc. which has been set up to maximize exposure for missing people of color. From their website:
Founded in 2008 by a veteran law-enforcement official, BAM will create public awareness campaigns for public safety and provide parents and loved ones of missing persons with a forum for spreading the word of their disappearance, with pictures and profiles of missing individuals. BAM will use a variety of media, including print, television, and the internet, to help locate missing persons of color for this severely underserved population
Mrs. Wilson and her team at BAM, Inc are definitely making a positive impact in our community. We all know that sometimes we don’t get the same type of media attention for whatever reasons when a person of color goes missing so BAM is doing something to change this. Please check them out when you get a chance.

This is a fantastic idea. We all know the media covers missing white(pregnant)woman until they are found. In my town we had this white woman who said she was kidnapped, raped and beaten up, only to find out she paid someone to beat her up so she could get the sympathy of her ex boyfriend. What about the runaway bride. So much attention is given to white women who are not in peril, yet those that need the media coverage get little to no coverage.
Anna you are exactly right, that’s why sites like BAM are soooo important and that’s why it’s great that the Internet allows us to level the playing field in so many areas.
