Cost Effective Childcare

A few weeks back we ran a link to an article on TheRoot.com about a 50 year anniversary. Well the author of that piece (Denene) also runs a blog called MyBrownBaby , pens a column in parenting magazine and was recently on The Today Show as an expert on cost effective childcare. Now me and TheMom have two small kids in daycare that we’re paying a small mortgage for (I can’t wait!!!!!! till they’re old enough to go to school and get out of daycare) so we were very interested in this piece. Check it out:

BMWK, how do you deal with cost effective healthcare? I work in an all white section of DC and everyone there has nannys. They’re walking around the neighborhood pushing strollers all day, taking the kids to the store etc… how in the world do folks afford ‘em?

I was about to cry last week because of childcare. I still have not found childcare for my 1 year old due to overcrowded family care centers. I live in NY, and our Mayor cut the programs here that make child care easier for working parents. It’s frustrating. My family helps me out alot, but I can’t always depend on them.

I don’t have kids yet, but I have researched the issue a bit as most of my coworkers and friends with children have nannies or do nanny shares. Based on my prelim findings (basically me pointblank asking them how much it costs. LOL!), nanny shares are not that much more expensive than daycares in the D.C. area if you have more than one child.

I’m lost for words because my 4 year old started Pre-k in August which she was in Daycare from 2 years old until 4. I recently just had twins and childcare cost has it the roof for me. I did some researching for months, childcare centers are overcrowed and over priced. Childcare would have costed me $3000 a month for the both of my twins. Thank GOD, I mean THANK GOD that my best friend mom babysit them for me for third of that. I didn’t have a clue where they would go until the I went back to work. So ladies find out if your job has child care subsidy program. I know the Federal Government does.

    BMWK,

Thanks so much for posting this piece on one of my favorite sites!

I’ll tell you this much: The reason my husband and I moved to GA was because the cost of living–including childcare–was too much for our salaries. In fact, I handed over exactly half my take-home pay to the lady who cared for my kids while I worked as an editor at Parenting, and on top of that, because we were doing things above board, we paid taxes and social security, which, at the end of the day, meant the nanny made more than me.

    Not cool.

So since both my husband and I are writers, we figured we could move somewhere quiet, where the cost of living is less expensive, and I could work from home as a freelance writer while my husband held the steady gig. It’s worked for us. But I feel for the families who can’t swing this.

Keep up the great work, BMWK–I really do love this site!

Reading the post and the comments makes me realize I can’t afford to have another baby. $3000 per month for day care for twins. That is crazy. My youngest child is 19 and back in her daycare day I paid $90 a week. Is daycare now gouging like gas prices did to us this past Summer?

    God is good,

I live in Connecticut and my one year old’s care cost $200 a week which is a bargain, but $800 dollars a month is a rent payment. So I’m thankful for Care for Kids that pays the majority of the bill and i only pay $185.00 because of my income, i work and go to school full-time and i still don’t have enough to pay the childcare alone. So CT has this program but i wanted to move one day, are there any other states in the U.S. that offer child care subsidy programs like Care 4 Kids?

The owners of the popular Smarter Toddler schools needed a daycare for their child and decided to start one in their NYC brownstone. So this is an option. Just get info from the state on how to do it. Here is a start http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/dc/dc.shtml Good luck.
