Off Brand Cereal… Aargh!

For the past few weeks, TheDad and I have been looking for ways to cut back our spending. We have cut back on eating out, trips to the mall, and expensive entertainment (that’s right…no tickets to see the EAGLES this fall.) But I think I took the cutbacks too far yesterday. Yesterday I did something I vowed I would never do. I stooped to an all time low at the grocery store. I purchased OFF BRAND CEREAL (O.B.C.)!!!! Have times gotten that tough? I have been so proud of myself… each week I would come home from the grocery store and I would announce to TheDad, I saved $30.. or I saved $40 this week. So I guess this week I wanted to increase my savings over previous weeks.

As I walked down the cereal aisle looking for the brands that were on sale, this week I could not ignore the O.B.C., it was calllllllling me. Saying look at meeeee… you can get a lot more for waaay less. And then I spotted it. There was this huge bag of OFF Brand Cocoa Puffs for like $2.79. Meanwhile, the small box of Cocoa Puffs was over $4.00. You could actually get almost 3 times as much for almost half the price. Buying OFF Brand items is a big risk because you get these off brand items home…and then the family tastes them and immediately invokes the gag reflex. And it’s not just the kids, TheDad and I are guilty of this behavior too. One time I purchased OFF BRAND fruit cups and TheDad said “don’t buy that again” as if he was laying down the law.

So I decided to mitigate my risk with this O.B.C. Since I normally purchase 2 boxes of cereal, I compromised and I purchased a box of Honey Nut Cheerios and then I purchased this Big GIGANTIC BAG of Cocoa Crunchies for $2.79. This morning when our six year old and I came down for breakfast, I asked her did she want French Toast Sticks or Cocoa Puffs for breakfast. She quickly said Cocoa Puffs…because she loves them. Then she opened the pantry door and pulls out that GIGANTIC Bag of Cocoa Crunchies…..and she immediately starts to ragging on the bag. She is like what is this big ole bag. This is not Cocoa Puffs. I said it tastes the same. She talked about the packaging for at least 5 minutes. Eventually we opened this bag and I immediately tasted one. In my mind, I was like oh no… they don’t taste the same. But I put on a smile and I said . Ummmm they are good. My daughter tasted one and she did not say anything. So I am thinking…that’s a good sign. I pour her a bowl of the O.B.C and pour milk over them. She eats a big scoop and says ….these taste gross with milk. I was like give it a chance…let the milk soften them up a bit. I knew deep down inside that the Cocoa Crunchies did not pass the test. When she left for the bus stop there was bowl of Cocoa Crunchies soaking in milk on the table.

And now I have this Big Gigantic Bag of O.B.C. And this bag is huge…..it filled-up the large Tupperware Cereal Storage container and there was still some left in the bag. It’s going to take us like 4 weeks to eat that cereal. It will eventually get eaten. Once all of the waffles, oatmeal, French toast sticks and other breakfast items get eaten up..and there is nothing left in the pantry but those Cocoa Crunchies… the kids and TheDad and I will eat them. Actually, TheDad and I shared a bowl of Cocoa Crunchies last night after the kids went to bed. They were not bad.

BMWK Family – Help me out here. If you are buying some OFF Brand items that you feel are a good buy ( as far as price, quantity, quality and taste) please share them with the rest of us. I think in 4 weeks when those Cocoa Crunchies are finally all gone, we will try another bag of O.B.C :-) .

If TheMom were running for politcal office they would say she's a cereal elitist. I told her along time ago to cut out those little fancy boxes of cereal. They be all little and cost the most. Tasting like candy, LOL. She is a Hillman girl so what would I expect :-) LOL

LMAO @ this post. I am an elitist cereal eater, too. I REFUSE, yes REFUSE, to eat no frills cereal. I am also elitist when it comes to my beverages and my husband always teases me. I have no O.B.C. products to recommend. Call me bourgie, but I likes my brands. good luck getting rid of that big ole bag of cereal, lol. Huemanitys last blog post..Fun in the Sun (and water)

LOL! Uh, no ma'am! I cannot think of nary an OBC that would appeal to the masses. Call me snooty, it's okay, hubby does, but I just can't do it...

I'm seeing a pattern where the husbands are down to save a few bucks at the expense of fancy packaging but we have to put up with you uppity sistas :-)

The name of the game is coupons, yes you can buy the better tasting, most expensive cereal with your weekly coupons. As a matter of fact, my sons told me that they could tell when I had a cereal coupon because that's when they did not have to eat Corn Flakes, Cheerios or Wheaties...old school

About 5 yrs ago I was not only visiting the grand opening of a store but saw the O B C and I bought 10 boxes. My kids hated the cereal. I am like TheMom, I put some in tupperware, my kids had friends over for the weekend, they did not mind eatting it, they even had it as a afternoon snack. The boxes that were left got sent home with our weekend guests. I go to a off brand grocery store that sells brand named products. I can get Trix and Cocoa Puffs on sale 2/$4.(of course I could save more if I were a coupon clipper). It's not worth it to save money on something they are not going to eat, or that I have to give away. LOL.

To Mom: You gotta go Cliff and Claire Huxtable on the kids. Next time go to the dollar store and get the biggest containers you can find and fill them with the OBC cereal and make sure you dispose of the bags, so you won't have evidence. It is a lot of work figuring which OBC cereal can actually pass for the name brand, but as long as the kids don't see the fancy boxes with it's recognizable cartoon characters, they can't argue with the taste. A lot of off brand things taste just as good. Also check the price difference between name brand items like Kelloggs and General Mills, they both sell raisin brand, but one is usually cheaper than the other. I also agree with Smooth coupons can also help with a OBC crisis because some off brand items just don't taste as good and it has nothing to do with the power of the mind, so you have to get what you know. The Capn' Crunch in the bag is not really the healthiest, but that is what I recommend for OBC. You can also save money by getting a membership at BJ's, Sam's or Costco (it is worth the $40). Buying in bulk can last you for months and you won't have to go grocery shopping as much. They also have a big box with 3 different varieties of cereal (name brand of course), and most of times it is cheaper than buying three boxes of cereal at a regular grocery store. You can get a guest membership if you want to do price comparisons before you actually commit to Sams, etc.

My wife periodically buys off brand items and I reject them every time. I always tell her that we can afford the name brand item even if we have to cut back somewhere else. Always buy the name brand. Mocha Dads last blog post..How to Live

LMAO @ mocha dad. I couldn't jump start my day well with some bad cereal! I haven't had too many no frils, but from what I did have....it was a no-no!

My wife knows I have a thing for Cap'n Crunch. However, I actually think it is overpriced (I know I sound like a cheapskate). I only buy it when it is on sale. However, my wife introduced me to some new cereal from Trader Joes. Man, that stuff is good! And it is cheaper than Cap'n Crunch. I guess it qualifies as off brand, but the taste is top notch. Now if you are talking about that stuff that comes in a plastic bag instead of a box, no way! That stuff is horrible.

There are some things I refuse to buy off-brand: Peanut butter, ketchup, salad dressing...and CEREAL! The rest is fair game because I'm a pretty good cook and and cake make just about anything else taste good. My suggestion for saving money on cereal: Try only buying brands you can get a coupon for. And also be on the lookout for grocery retailers buy one get one free deals, even if it means going to a store you don't usually shop at just to pick up the cereal. terrys last blog post..Does Secular = Worldliness, and Other Such Musings

I have to admit that cereal is one of the only areas where we refuse to buy off brand. Everyone can taste the difference! (oh and it's totally true about the OB fruit cups. we ende dup throwing them out!) Some good off brand buys: - Safeway brand cran-juice blends (we are addicted to Oceanspray but the store brand is almost BETTER) - When it comes to medication, check the "active ingredient" against the name brand. Most of the time it's exactly the same in the store brand and will save you several $$

OMG!!!! O.B.C.! Never...I am with TheMom and Huemanity. I refuse to eat off brand cereal. I will cut back on something else before I give into off brand cereal. Don't do that to the babies!!!! I make a special trip to Wal-mart just to get my Capn-Crunch and Froot Loops at a cheap price. LOL

You just need to shop somewhere else for cereal. I don't buy OBC because it doesn't taste as good as the brand stuff. Might as well just take the money and burn it. Instead I buy in mass quantities at the store when it's on sale (like 6 for $10 or whatever) at the bargain supermarket or at Walmart. You just have to know where to shop and when to shop for the bargain name brand cereal. And a lot of it goes on sale when people get their food stamps around the first of the month. Milk on the other hand is never on sale when cereal is though....but I'll get over that. tinas last blog post..Ask The Preggie Lady!

I agree with Georgia Peche. Most off-brand cereals taste the same to me. Once I made the mistake and bought my two-year-old daughter Dora cereal because she saw it in the grocery store and sounded so cute calling for "DOWA!" When we got home I put it in one of those plastic containers and it may as well have been sawdust to her. Sigh. Darn those commercial brands. I am in the definite minority here.....I ONLY buy off brand cereal. My kids and husband go thru too much of it to buy it at 3.99 or more a box. They can kill a box in one sitting, about 3 times a week. I buy the Malt-O-Meal,( if you've not tried, do...you'll be out of about 2.00) and they taste exactly the same. The only flavor I stay away from is Corn Flakes, and they are nasty to me anyway, no matter who makes them. Right now at Wal-Mart, you can get a medium bag of Cinnamon Toaster (Cinnamon Toast Crunch) for 1.25. That's 4 bags for 5.00. My husband USED to be a cereal elitist....until I started saving the boxes and bags, and just pouring the off brand over into name brand packaging...by the time that he caught me, he'd been eating it for over a year. I did the same to get him onto 2% milk. I'd wash out the whole milk container and pour the 2% in...that worked until he wanted to know why the container said it expired 5 months ago...

just wandered across your site as i was trying to google the price of cap'n crunch at walmart (to see if i had gotten a deal at the grocery store tonight). just wanted to let you know my cereal trick lol.... i buy name brands @ about ten at a time ( we usually have to play cereal tetris in the pantry to get them to fit). each week, one of the local grocers features a ridiculously low price on one type or brand of cereal....i pair that with coupons ive held from previous sunday papers and never pay more than 2$ a box (even for the big box!). i agree w/ you 100% about wm's cocoa puffs! lol. however, the wildlife out back appreciated them, specially a rather large raccoon we've nicknamed 'lebowski'.

I just discovered your site, while looking for the names of children's cereals for a couple's baby shower (I am going to use them as an icebreaker game--u know the one where u place a name on someone's back--I'm going to use cereals instead since the mommie-to-be works for Kellogg. :) Anyway, I'm at work and I haven't ever blogged or read blogs before--I'm a very faithful professional and I try to work at work and do personal at home (not alway successful, but mostly) Still, I couldn't help reading ALL of the comments, they were on point and refreshing--all in language that made me feel right at home. Definitely going to try putting the OBCs in the Branded Box. Reminds me of the jeans my mom turned into Chic no-pockets (my butt was too big for the original ones)--whatever works, right?! I'll also try the Cinnamon Toaster asap--Love the CTC, but the price keeps me from buying it often. I really like certain store brands like Albertson's, WM, Walgreen's and CVS (I would include Target, but since they have changed their return policy where they almost take NOTHING back unless you just walked out and turned right around with it--they are on my 'u-know-what' list.) These stores go out of their way to create taste-alikes. Someone said earlier to check the ingredients--they are often exactly the same. And the more ingredients in the product, the more likely that it will taste a mess because there's more to mess up. That's probably why Terry doesnt mess around with salad dressing, ketchup, and peanut butter (me neither, yuk!) because there's more potential to be "OFF" with a mixture than say a garlic powder or aspirin or cheese (one ingredient). Also, many of the store brands are made by the top brand producer. For example, Target's store brand bags are made by the maker of Husky bags--good bags made out of Dallas. Maybe this is why I don't (shouldn't :0)) Blog -- gettin' carried away. gettin back to work--i'll check in again soon. Tootles!

Well I have a big surprise for you all. Many times the OBC comes from the SAME factories as the Name brand ones. My husband used to work on the line and he used to watch one side go down to the OBC and the other go to the name brand. The only thing different is the packaging. The OBC is much cheaper because they have little to no advertising costs. Think about it.. why would the company want to lose money when they can make it off of the OBC too? I used to think the same way when I was a child. The kid wants the one being advertised mostly because of the cartoon character or a prize in the box. We have been trained to think that is better. Wal-mart does have great malti-o-meal brands, you can even try the little bags for a dollar in some stores.

I incredibly like that which you had to say. I've been thinking about starting a internet page like this, but I just don't know if I'd have the tenacity and the momentum to often going day subsequent to day. I guess I prefer to go for it if I certainly want it! haha. Actually on you for YOUR cyberspace log!
