The Man Movie Marathon

We hope everyone had a great Christmas break and as before we get to the new year we’re back to provide you with the last few posts of 2008. I (TheDad) wanted to share something that went down over our Christmas weekend. We went to spend the holidays with TheMom’s family and one night TheMom was excited because she was going out to an ol’ school – high school reunion get together with her sister.

Instead of being bored sitting in a room at the in-laws I decided to make… dum dee dee dummmmm, “The Man Movie Marathon”. The day before The “MMM” my father-in-law had introduced me to the beauty of blue-ray DVD’s and the experience that follows so before  TheMom rolled out we made a pit stop at Blockbusters. I scooped three movies: Traitor with Don Cheadle, The Bank Job with Jason Statham and an old school classic Deliverance with Burt Reynolds and John Voight (I had never seen it).

In true woman fashion TheMom was hating from the start. She kept claiming that me or her dad would be sleep, that we wouldn’t make it through The “MMM” etc. etc. etc… It really was just her disappointment that she couldn’t be included. She kicked the hatin into high gear when she saw her father rearranging the seating to give us the full theater effect. lol

Well three movies and 4.5 – 5 hours later, the first edition of The Man Movie Marathon wrapped up. And it was a complete success. Here’s my quick summary of the three films:

Traitor – Don Cheadle has done it again. Definitely pick this up for movie night soon!

The Bank Job – My brother said he liked it, I could’ve done without it. Jason Statham will always be known to me as The Transporter. If he’s not driving an Audi A8 I don’t want to see him.

Deliverance – This was a good flick full of surprises and no way could you guess what was coming up next at any point of the movie.

BMWK, do you ever do movie marathons? Fellas do you come up with your own types of entertainment and the wife hates because she really wants to be down?

The soon to be hubby can’t stay awake long enough for movie marathons LOL. But the only one I think he would be able to stay up for is a Trapped in The Closet marathon. He was asleep when I told him to open up his gift Christmas Eve. He opened his TTC chapters 1-12 (he already bought chapters 13-whatever it is) and immediately got up and popped it in the DVD player.

Oh wait, I may have spoke too soon. The only other movie marathon he can stay up for is Madea plays/movies.

Yes Sir. I was trying to think of the perfect phrase for it. lol
The Holidays is the perfect time.

My movie marathon consisted of the following over Christmas Break (although I will throw in the flicks viewed over the past month). Actually, for the sake of brevity, I will only do twelve.

    1. Valkyrie
    2. Seven Pounds
    3. Quantum of Solace
    4. Slumdog Millionaire
    5. Twilight
    6. The Secret Life of the Bees
    7. Cadillac Records
    8. Changeling
    9. The Family that Preys
    10. Eagle Eye
    11. Traitor
    12. Pride and Glory

Top Three Must see Man Rankings below (excluding obligatory ethnoloyalty)

    1. Slumdog Millionare
    2. Quantum of Solace
    3. Eagle Eye/Traitor
    ____________________________________________________

    1. Valkyrie: Admittidly, I’m watching this on ovguide lol. I read so many bad reviews, I didn’t want to spend the money. So far so bad. The story is compelling; however, Tom Cruise didn’t have the decency to at least learn a German accent. I’m in the middle of it right now. We all know that the plot of course, does not succeed.

    2. Seven Pounds: Mixed emotions. The acting was spectacular. I like when Will Smith moves away from the loud mouth tough guy roles. To see quality Will Smith, you have to watch Six Degrees of Separation (he plays a gay con-artist)).

    3. Quantum of Solace: If you like action, you will love this movie. You have to catch the camera work in the beginning. Definitely one of the better Bond movies. Shout out to my dude Jeffrey Wright.

    4. Slumdog Millionaire: This movie is the best movie I’ve seen in a long time. I’m really trying to think of a movie that is better than this movie. If you haven’t seen this, watch it immediately. This is a love story, but it has so many levels I’m sure it’s going to win several awards.

    5. Twilight: Typical teenie bopper movie. Not worth it. I just like vampire flicks. This one wasn’t bad, but not worth paying for . . .

    6. The Secret Life of the Bees: Overall nice movie and good work. All of the artist did well. Very good cast.

    7. Cadillac Records: MAN ALERT: This is not a Bioncee (sp?) movie. I repeat, this is not a KNOWLES movie! I was shocked to see that Bioncee’s role was minimal in this movie and the story focused on Muddy Waters. I love the blues, so I am too biased. I loved this movie.

    8. Changeling: Be prepared to jump off a building after watching this movie. If you are the dark type, this movie is for you.

    9. The Family that Preys: Another typical Tyler film. The acting was superb, but Tyler needs to go ahead and let someone else do the writing. The ultra-playlike insults and the “over glorification of the working class negros while demonizing successful blacks is starting to get real old.” Tyler has done more harm in stereotype successful brothers in five years than any medium has done in a lifetime. (except of course, if he plays the professional black guy e.g., Why did I get married).

    10. Eagle Eye: Nice Suspense/Thriller. The plot has a nice twist. It’s like a Tom C novel.

    11. Traitor: Don and J. Wright are the two most underrated black actors in the game. (and Morgan Freeman too). He is so awesome, I can’t explain it. Although the ending is a bit typical.

    12. Pride and Glory: A blockbuster/thriller. Typical action flick… If you liked Departed, you will like this too.

    @ Pete,

Man, that was a great list! I’ve seen 2-3 adn 6-12 on your list. Thanks for warning me that Twilight wasn’t worth my time. I’m definitely going to check out Slumdog Millionaire.

I totally agree with your assessments of the other movies. ROFL at wanting to jump off a building after Changeling. But it was a compelling movie nonetheless. It made me go to my son’s room and grab, kiss, hug and tickle him after watching it. I can’t imagine having to go through something like that as a mother.

Will was THE MAN in Seven Pounds! He was absolutely spectacular. Him and Rosario Dawson made a great leading man/leading lady in the film. It was a touching story (although bittersweet).

Eagle Eye was like Enemy of the State on steroids, but I loved both of them.

My husband will watch the DVD set of the Bernie Mac Show’s first season till the cows come home. We also watched a couple of movies that we hadn’t given time to before:

    1. No Country For Old Men
    2. In the Electric Mist

Both of them star Tommy Lee Jones (stumbled on the second one quite by accident), and both of them were great crime/mystery/thriller type of stories.

    @ Harriet

Yeah I was really happy to see Will and Rosario in that light. I admit I had to hit up wikipedia in the movies to find out what was going on though lol. I mean they went the suspense route, but I think they should have stuck with the love story route instead. lol. After watching the end of Soul Men, I shed a couple of man tears (tight held fist close to the mouth you know…)with the girlfriend so I’ve chilled out on the Bernie Mac stuff for a while.

I have to check out those last two. My next two will be Doubt and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (although I hear that bad boy is like 3 hours).

    ROFL at the “man tears.”

My husband did the same thing when he watched the end of “First Sunday,” and believe it or not, “The Last Samurai” (arguably Tom Cruise’s best movie).

I actually went online to watch Slumdog Millionaire…you were right, Pete. That movie had me hooked from the first minute. It was an amazing story line. My husband and I will be going to the theater to see that one. It was really refreshing to see a well thought out, well acted movie that outlined a way of life we rarely see (except on those pitiful public service announcements) in the United States.

I was really moved by it.

    See . . .
Why you gotta laugh at my Man tears? lol. I fell asleep on Valkyrie again… lol. Will try to finish again tonight.
