I already have a favorite line…when Beyonce says “I’m gonna show you crazy” and it looks like she proceeds to take care of business. I am looking forward to seeing this one!

  • Nicole

This plot has been done so many times, in so many movies, but I’ll probably Netflix it when it comes out on dvd.

I’m glad to see that Bee is finally doing a movie that doesn’t require her to sing and dance.

I agree. Nice to see Bey in a movie that she is not singing/dancing in. Time for Bey to remind us why she makes the big bucks. I only seen a few minutes of Dream Girls but her personality was suited for playing in a “Austin Powers” movie.

I am also looking foward to seeing this movie. She is married now and you do protect it at all costs. She looks like she was kicking some serious butt and her costar is not too bad on the eyes. LOL.

Wow, I guess Beyonce is getting pretty serious about making a transition into movies huh? I do remember she was really really awesome in Carmen, but not too much of a fan of anything else that she did.

I saw “Not Easily Broken” and I have to say I am already tired of the white girl homewrecker theme! It’s like we will showcase black relationships yet subject the black man to his #1 weakness – WHITE GIRLS! So cliche yet because I’m all about supporting my people I may go check this out anyway if I can’t find anything else to do lol.

Beyonce is better suited for the studio but I’m sure will keep trying to act until she wins some type of award. I just don’t enjoy her acting for some reason. She has yet to play a believable role and I know I am coming across as negative but sheesh how many more movie roles is she going to waste?!? I LOVE Beyonce the singer I just wish her acting alter ego would take a break! On the other hand…Taraji is killing the big screen :-)

  • http://politicalmusic.wordpress.com Political Pete

I object to white women being the black man’s #1 weakness. That would be juicy bootay.

I’m not saying that I agree or believe it to be true in any sense….It just seems like pop culture and the media like to insinuate that which is why this new plot theme is so annoying!

  • http://politicalmusic.wordpress.com Political Pete

    I’m just trippin’

I just really didn’t really notice the onslaught of movies with white women stealing black men. Really. This move is certainly better than the onslaught of black comedies that had a monopoly on black cinema. Remember a couple of years ago we couldn’t get major production companies to do anything (notwithstanding Will Smith’s star power) but Soul Plan-ish movies or Tyler Bashing the black man Perry movies. Believe me, it wasn’t the lack of good writing, but Paramount being risk averse. (which led to Tyler Perry and Ice Cube starting their own companies).

The black on the big screen are beginning to be casted in more diverse roles though. I mean just look at the previous year . . . so long as the dollars demostrate the a black lead can pull in the dollars . . . they are good. And the entertainer turned actor is the best sell = they already have a built in audience (kind of like making movies from comic book stories or famous novels).

2008: Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Taraj), Not Easily Broken, Seven Pounds, Cadillac Records, Frost/Nixon (Edi), Doubt, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Spirit, Wanted, Soul Men, Madagascar, Role Models, Quantum of Solace (sort of), Slumdog (if you are doing the whole diversity thing), Australia (diversity hit), Ballast, The Express, The Secret Life of the Bees, Lakeview Terrac

  • LaNeitria

The movie seems interesting, but I wish they could have gotten someone else to play the wife instead of Beyonce. She should just stick with singing.

  • http://politicalmusic.wordpress.com Political Pete

    @ LaNeitria,

If not Beyonce, then who? They had to have some star power. She is not that bad for the singer/rapper turned actor.

Look at the list… she is doing pretty good.

    1. Will Smith (great)
    2. Markie Mark (great)
    3. Queen Latifah (good)
    4. Ludacris (very good for few roles)
    5. Eminem (he was supposed to start in Wanted – need to see more)
    6. Common (very good for few roles. did you see him in Street Kingz?)
    7. Ice T (getting better… needs to take more challenging roles)
    8. LL Cool J (pretty good – same comment as above)
    9. Mos Def (decent and overrated)
    10. Ice Cube (need more roles)
    11. T.I. (average, did okay in American Gangster)
    12. Master P (horrible)
    13. Method Man, Snoop, Redman (Snoops ok). Need to see non-coon roles
    14. Xzibit (decent)
    15. Nas (need another role)
    16. Eve (terrible)
    17. Puffy (was okay, until he stepped out of his league -should not have tried to do a role Sidney Poitier played -

  • E.R.

I agree with you LaNeitria, I would much rather see someone like Gabriel Union in that part.

  • LaNeitria

    @ Political Pete,

I am not sure who would be good (I need to think about it), but I don’t think that it has to be confined to a singer/rapper/actor to have any star power. I think that this movie is only going to get marginal success, no matter who is starring in it. I also don’t want to see the usual suspects (Taraj Henson, Gabrielle Union, Sanaa Lathan). I just wish that people would use either someone who is new to the scene or someone who we don’t see alot of. How about one of the Mowry sisters or Paula Patton?

    @ E.R.,

While I think that Gabrielle would be a good choice, I also have seen a lot of her. I think we need to see someone new in these roles.

  • http://politicalmusic.wordpress.com Political Pete

    @ LaNeitra,

I hear you! Especially when they are taking opportunities from other up and coming talent. However, its a catch 22. The benefit of the repeat actors is that they can build some star power and diversify their roles… which in a weird way makes it more acceptable to cast blacks as leads in “non-black” themed movies. Or…eventually, they can pull someone in by their coat-tail.

Remember when Samuel Jackson went off about rappers/actors? lol

Political Petes last blog post..Israel’s Bully Pulpit: A Litmus Test for Members of Congress

  • LaNeitria

    @ Political Pete,

Yes I remember when Samuel Jackson went off…lol! Now some rappers/singers can actually act, like Will Smith and Ludacris. But people like Beyonce, as much as I respect her for being a great entertainer needs some work in the acting game.

I will agree that repeat actors do need to build their acting resume, but often times you see them playing the same role in different movies, and I don’t really hear tell of them putting anybody else on as they receive any stardom. However,I actually applaud Taraj Henson. I believe that she is in the Curious Case of Benjamin Button and is getting rave reviews for her role. I am happy for her because I thought that she was going to be your typical run of the mill ghetto movie actress, lol. It seems that she is being placed in the mainstream from out of nowhere, even though she was in Baby Boy and Hustle and Flow and other movies.

  • http://politicalmusic.wordpress.com Political Pete

Ha! Did you say Baby Boy?! That is one of the hood classics! Great movie. Yeah I hear you, Rosario Dawson has come a long way from HBO Kids and He Got Game Too. Beyonce needs work, but she isn’t the worst. She has star power so they will keep casting her.

Yeah with Taraj, it’s goign to be interesting. I have “Not Easily Broken” on the list for the next month. (Need to catch up on the Golden Globe winners first!) She is slated in another couple of interesting flicks (Hurrican Season – about a Katrina basketball team and Once Fallen (In production)). I’m curious to see how she does in Once Fallen.

Gabrielle is great, it seems like she keeps getting typecasted in the love flicks (not that anything is wrong with that). I loved her in “Running with Scissors” She is rumored to be in The Van Zandt Shakedown but we will see . . .
