Michelle Obama Tells Ty She’s Not Having It!

Yesterday we ran a story about the company Ty, creator of Beanie Babies making two AA dolls that coincidentally were names Sasha and Malia. They went on to say that it was purely a coincidence and that they were in no way based on real people including the two daughters of our new President Barack Obama. Well even Stevie Wonder saw right through that and yesterday Michelle Obama released a statement through her PR people. Check this out from the Washington Post:

First Lady Michelle Obama, who has described herself “first and foremost…Malia and Sasha’s mom,” has defended her daughters’ likeness, saying that it is not proper for a company that makes the plush “Beanie Babies” to produce dolls called “Sweet Sasha” and “Marvelous Malia.”

“We feel it is inappropriate to use young, private citizens for marketing purposes,” Michelle Obama’s press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, said in a statement today.

Good for you, Mrs. First Lady! I’m glad she diplomatically told them that under no circumstances were her daughters to be used as the target of any marketing schemes.

I already ranted in the “Beanie Baby” Post. Unfortunately “they” are not “private citizens” anymore and it is up to us/everyone to respect her daughers as though they are our own children. All parents rave about their kids and have pics of them at work on our desk or taped in our lockers. It is hard enough for a kid to be a kid, please let Malia and Sasha get the chance of a life time to just be kids and enjoy living in “The White House”, and understand that they still have to share their father will all of us.

Everybody is talking about these dolls! I agree with all the previous comments, but as I have admitted on other sites: I can’t lie – this is exactly the kind of gift I was trying to get for my daughter this past Christmas! (She already has one brown-skinned doll that we’ve named Sasha, so I was looking for one to call Malia…) Nevertheless, our First Lady has to do whatever she can to protect her girls, even from those like myself who want to see them as role models for their own daughters – and especially against marketing schemes like the one Ty is trying to promote.
