Married 84 Years and Counting!

My cousing sent me over an article about Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher who recently were added to the Guiness book of world records. Why, because they’ve been married for over 84 years! Now this is realy deal black love at it’s best. Way before Barack and Michelle or Cliff and Clair there was Herbert and Zelmyra.

Check out what the two had to say about each other:

“He was not mean; he was not a fighter,” Zelmrya said. “He was quiet and kind. He was not much to look at but he was sweet.”

Herbert said Zelmyra never gave him any trouble. “No, no trouble at all. We never argued, but we might have disagreed,” he said.

The not much to look at had me cracking up. lol. Through the years they’ve put 5 children through college and maintained a relationship filled with love and God even though they’ve attended different churches the entire time. Check out the full article here. It’s definitely a good read and a great example!

Life can still be simple like that if we allow it to be. No arguments, no strife, no drama and complication. Just love, respect, laughter, kindness, and above all, God. We would do well to take notes from the life of this married couple. We can still make them like that if we allow ourselves to.

84 years!?!? Goodness! I wonder how old they are? I know in their younger days I think people used to get married as early as like 17 or maybe younger, didn't they?

The problem is that so many try to keep up with the "Jones'" that they forget to take time to appreciate their surroundings.

Our older generation have so much wisdom and so many stories to share and when I look in my kids eyes and see their enthusiam as they listen to the stories be told by someone who has seen it all and lived through such great odds, it just melts me. My oldest daughter works in a nursing home while finishing up her last few months of college. My youngest volunteers with disadvantaged youths.

This is about love not "black" love. People gotta stop catergorizing themselves. This couple has been married (not living together) but married for 84years. Longevity is longevity, there is no black longevity. Also, stop waiting for something good to happen to have to "inspire" us. What we all can learn from this couple is that they along the way agreed to be themselves and both agree to respect their differences(i.e. agreeing to go to different churches). The main reason why relationships don't last is that people are quick to split when they don't get their way and don't want to compromise. Its cool they could throw smart-ass comments back at each other and not care because they literally have lived through it all. They made it through "Great Depression", civil rights movement and so forth. Women gotta stop expecting a marriage like they see on tv or basing their ideal man on some celeb. Life is not tv and tv is not life. That being said through 84years I know they went through more than any of us will ever know so much respect. I like the fact that the woman never caused the man any problems lol.
