Things People With Kids Like To Do: Live Black History

This weekend our suggestion for “Things People With Kids Like To Do” is to allow your child to live black history. By living black history we mean, take them out of the house and share with them something that they’re not going to receive in school. Have you even asked your child what they’ve learned so far for Black History Month?

Instead of having the kids write or read the same old reports on Martin and Malcolm do some research and find out who pushed for “change” in your local community during the civil rights era. Take a walking Black History tour if they’re available in your city like this one in San Diego or this one in Toronto. Is there a mural or exhibit in your city or town like the image above of Duke Ellington that’s located on DC’s historic U Street? Check it out and use it as a learning tool. Go to the local library and find books on someone that may not be so famous.

The list goes on and on but the point is to give your child a real black history experience that they won’t soon forget and may cherish for years to come.

What wonderful suggestions and thank you for providing them! However, we should not continue to limit teaching our children about who we are and what we’ve accomplished to the month of February. In order to connect them to our greatness as a people, rebuilding how we see ourselves, is going to take more than 28 days! Planting these life changing seeds has to be an ongoing process, and there certainly is a wealth of infromation that can be taught about our significant gifts, talents, and accomplishments! I’m still learning… I’m still in awe of who I really am! WOW!!

Parents and educators have to committ to 365 days of planting seeds of hope and inspiration. I do it in my classroom, and it’s incredible to see their faces and reactions about what we’ve done as a people. I told my students to watch Gifted Hands: The Story of Ben Carson, and the conversation in our classroom on Monday was just incredible… As a teacher, I’m beginning to see a shift in some on how they see themselves as a person (self-image), and how they feel about learning! Having children excited and keeping children excited about learning is what it’s all about!

We have work to do! Let’s do it. I’m still learning and I love it! I especially love to see the light in my students eyes.
