If Your Marriage Was a Movie, What’s On The Soundtrack?

by Tara Pringle Jefferson

Fun post today (I know y’all are tired of my relationship stories!)

Here’s my soundtrack for the movie of my marriage, from the moment we first met ‘til now :

1. “You Don’t Know My Name” by Alicia Keys – I lived in the residence hall where he worked and he didn’t pay me any attention for almost that whole year. I would catch a glimpse of him working in his office, and he would give me a nod, but that’s it. I worked EXTREMELY hard to get his attention, almost going as far as the “You know, I don’t usually do this….” phone call Alicia had to make.

2. “Let’s Chill” by Guy – This was actually on a CD mix that I asked him to make for me when we were “just friends.” Apparently, he says he put the song on there as some type of hint to me. Who knew?

3. “When I’m With You” by Tony Terry. This is actually “our song.”

4. “You For Me” by Johnny Gill. The song I walked down the aisle to at our wedding. (Played in Madea’s Family Reunion)

5. “He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)” by Jill Scott. Just a beautiful song that has me in tears when I hear it and think about us.

6. “Forever My Lady” by Jodeci. When I was pregnant with our daughter and in NYC for a summer internship, I played this song every day on the train on the way to work. I couldn’t wait to get home, have his baby and be a family.

7. “Superwoman” by Alicia Keys. As I was in the OR having a C-section with our second kid, the anesthesiologist, a 30something black woman, put on some Alicia Keys as they were prepping me, to put me at ease. As they were pulling out my little one, this song was playing. Every time I hear it now, I can’t help but smile.

8. “As” by Stevie Wonder. Says it all. “Until the day that 8 times 8 times 8 times 8 is four…I’ll be loving you…”

So what songs would make the cut for your soundtrack?

For our 5th anniversary (we’re coming up on 10 now) this was the playlist (cd then) that I made for my husband. We listened to it as we drove out of town for a getaway. I still listen to it today and the songs are still very relevant and have kept me where I need to be. 1. "Still" by Tamia 2. "Tru Love" by Faith Evans 3. "The Truth" by India.Arie 4. "That's why they call it love" by Gladys Knight 5. "Angel" by Anita Baker 6. "Beautiful" by India.Arie 7. "I love me some him" by Toni Braxton 8. "Trippin" by Toni Braxton 9. "Brown Skin" by India.Arie 10. “For the love of you” by Hil St. Soul 11. "Good Man" by India.Arie For this anniversary I would add: "Far away,” “Where would I be," and "House of Love" by Kindred and the Family Soul -they really do write the soundtrack for relationships "I can't stop loving you" by Kem “For ever, for always for love” by Lala Hathaway

"Saved the Best for Last", Vanessa Williams. We were best friends and mutual relationship coaches before we started dating. He would help me through baby daddy drama and I would help him with his love life. I even introduced him to one of my acquaintances and they even went out a few times! Eventually we saw in each other what we had been looking for elsewhere. Besides, we knew so much about each other that I told him, "We are either getting married or I will have to kill you ", lol. And after 15 years of marriage, he is still the Best and Last man for me!

When we met: 4 Page Letter, Aaliyah (long distance and we met online) When we met face to face: Setembro, Take 6 (that song nia long and cuba gooding jr. made love to on Boyz N Da Hood...but we didn't make love...we fell further in love) When he moved to LA: Beautiful Surprise, India.Arie i didn't think he would follow me to LA. i thought for a moment that if we wanted things to go further i would eventually have to move to NC When we got married: Lizell in D Flat (you love me, especially different every time...), Jill Scott we had both been celibate for years before getting married, and making love after that long period...ooo-weee! When our marriage was encountering difficulties: Motives and Thoughts, a spoken word piece by Lauryn Hill When our marriage was solidified by a renewed commitment to one another: I Gotta Be, Jagged Edge Now, with these financial difficulties (please don't laugh): We're All in This Together, High School Musical. Before when I was dealing with the fact that my husband is quite impulsive when it comes to money, I was singing N'Sync's "Bye Bye." But I later realized that if we were going to work it out, then I couldn't be threatening to leave every time things got hard. 3 The overall hitmaker for our relationship: Unbreakable, Alicia Keys

@ Joyce - I need to go pick up Kindred's music. But they said in an interview that everytime they make a new CD, she ends up pregnant. Hmmm. Don't know if I need to be listening to that music then! LOL. @ Yolanda - You know, I don't really like Babyface, but that song is classic! Reminds me of my hubby too! @ FCG - Just a big "AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" for you. :) @ Staycee2 - I love it! @ Dnoblin - GREAT songs. I might have to steal one or two... @ MrsT - Have I heard that Brandy song? Hmmm.... @ Harriet - Well, if you are talking about songs from HSM, then maybe I should watch it... @ Lori - I can't BELIEVE I forgot about Betcha By Golly Wow. And Phyllis Hyman? When I saw the headline of this post I did not even read the article, I went straight to read the comments. Joyce, Toni's "trippin" is a great song, but the whole CD is great. My daugther stole mine and listens to it every night while she goes to sleep, or when she wants to clean and rearrange my house and cabinets and I can't find anything. Hubby and I don't have an "our song". I guess I would say the "Maxwell" song I belong to you or You belong to me or whatever the name of the song is. I was going to say (being it was the first moive date we had alone)"My Heart Will Go On" Celine Dion but that just means that if hubby died I would go on. LOL. Most men don't want to ever think that.

It won't really happen, I just give him the wife means business look". After all, it's his own "honey do list. Nieja, having a happy marriage means not sweating the small stuff. Being a wife and mother you/we do have to choose our battles.
