I work at an HBCU, and I find myself always trying to instill this very concept into some of the students here.

Many complain about always being under a magnifying glass as a minority. My thing is this: I would WELCOME the magnifying glass! If all eyes are on you, then by all means, show them what you’re working with. Don’t try to shrink back and hide! Be the best you can be! If folks have a negative preconceived notion, that magnifying glass will convict them. If folks have no notion at all and wish to discover more, that magnifying glass will make the person being examined an ambassador.

Just my two cents. Arthur Ashe was onto something.
