Sleep Is For The Weak

by Tara Pringle Jefferson
For the past two nights, I have gone to sleep before 9 p.m.
Woo-hoo!
I didn’t stay up checking e-mail and writing blog posts or posting on Twitter or updating Facebook or brainstorming article ideas or folding clothes or straightening the living room.
I was tired so I took my butt to bed.
Do you know how liberating that was?
I felt if I went to bed before midnight that I must be slacking. After all, if I crashed before the day officially turned into the next, then who would wash the dishes, or do the laundry or write these blog posts?
Don’t successful people pull all-nighters, working into the wee hours of the morning to see their dreams come true? If you go to bed at a decent hour, does that mean you’re not working hard enough?
I tried to push all those thoughts out of my head and took myself to bed. I pulled the covers up tight and watched an episode of Scrubs before falling asleep with a chuckle still in my throat. It was nice. I highly recommend it.
What about you, BMWK family? What time do you usually go to bed? Do you feel guilty if everything’s not checked off your to-do list before you hit the sack?

This is too funny! But the answer is yes. I always start off with a huge to do list and I do feel bad if I don’t get it all done. However, I’m learning to let some of it go and carry it over to the next day’s to do list. But guess what, then I’m up at 4 am because I just can’t sleep right until it’s marked off.
If I go to sleep any earlier than 11, I always feel like it’s too good to be true. In fact,I think it would have been an accident or I’m sick. Between 11 and 12 on week night, my husband better not even think about getting some nookie during that time. All I can focus on is how many hours I have left to wake up and get the kids ready.
Wow…I’m with Regina. If I get to sleep before 11 pm, I’m either sick, or my son is out of town, or I’m on a vacation from work. I try, but it just doesn’t happen.
If you go to bed at a decent hour, does that mean you’re not working hard enough? No.
Sleep is so important to your well-being. I would rather focus on creating a schedule around quality sleep as opposed to stressing about items on my to-do list. Let go and live.
I do hope you find the time to either meditate, nap or allow your mind to relax. It is a great way to recharge your mind and body to perform to the best of its abilities.
Ok, now back to reality in this American culture. Maybe I should move to Europe where siestas are viewed as important.
I have always been a night owl. I am usually not in bed until after midnight however I do not have a massive to-do list in my head that keeps me awake. I never feel guilty about falling asleep early.
This is a struggle that my bride has however and we have been working over the last few months to shorten her list so that it is not hanging over her head. It works for me because I am up anyway and now have something productive to do.
All you youngsters..Sigh, just shaking ma old gray head. When I was was younger and my kids were younger, and my wife was younger, if I got to bead before midnight on any given night i was absolutely amazed. My wife was even worse than me, and usually up to 1am or so. Whats funny is I would say to myself back then, “Its midnight, I really should go to bed soon so that I can function tommorrow. Now that I am more… seasoned… its more like ” Its 8:30pm (yawn) and i am going to make it (yawn) to the end of the first quarter (yawn) of the the monday ni(yawn)ght football (yawn)..gamzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Diffence in getting older is realizing that the things that I used to stress and not sleep over, will (Unless I wake up and read my name in the obituary) still be there the next day. Nitey Nite Yall….
Regina good nookie is suppose to make go to sleep. In my case it engergizes me. I have always been a night stalker. Even if I am in bed before 2 I still can’t sleep. I get my best sleep between 5-8. I wake up refreshed and ready to start my day. LOL @ Dee for being “seasoned” and going to bed at 8:30. Yes I have noticed ppl older than me going to bed early, When you get “seasoned” there should be less things to worry about.
If I am in bed before midnight I must have had dental surgery and pain killers. LOL.
Funny, I used to beat myself up on the rare occasions I would make it to bed before midnight. I have realized there are always things to do and getting them done all in one day is nearly impossible in my world….and I have learned its okay. Besides, if today were my last day no one is going to remember that I left a few dishes in the sink or didn’t get that last load of laundry done (or the one before it folded)…..what will be remembered are the things I did acccomplish (and hopefully I will be remembered for more than laundry and dishes). My great grandmother used to say woman’s work is never done; she rises in the dark when everyone is still sleeping and is the last to go to bed well after the setting of the sun. In my youth, oh how I would challenge her on this and how “wrong” I felt it was. But now, with four children of my own, I have learned to accept and embrace her wisdom!
