Activism = CHANGE…Not Complaint

by Harriet Hairston
There’s a lot that bothers me about America in general. We place too much stock in the unessential (stardom, entertainment, gossip) and not enough on the important things (marriage, family, parenthood, children). Before you tell me to leave and move to another country, let me say that I don’t think any other country would provide me the same opportunities that this one has. With that said, however, I’ve noticed a few disturbing thought processes:
- Groupthink: If you don’t agree with what the media or a community portrays as their take on an issue, then you must not be intellectual or compasssionate.
- Along the same lines, this “Majority rules in politics, so it must rule within the privacy of each home.” That’s some bull. I do things much differently within my family than what I see portrayed in other homes. No, I’m not burying bodies in my backyard or selling my kids into prostitution, but I do play a role in raising my children as God fearing individuals who will stand for what is right, no matter who opposes them.
- Complaining! If something doesn’t go the way someone wants it to, they complain and complain and complain, thinking the squeaky wheel will get the oil. In my humble opinion, all that complaining (i.e. Tea Parties whose participants don’t even know what they’re protesting and complaining about) does nothing but take up unnecessary space and oxygen.
How do we get beyond these issues?
- Well for one thing, stop imitating and BE someone! So many people want to be like someone else. It’s fine to believe in someone’s principles, but to imitate personalities is insulting to God. Be yourself!
- Stop complaining and DO something! Don’t think one person can make a difference? Well, look at the quiet servitude of Martin Luther King, Jr., the crashing confidence of Muhammad Ali, or even the time changing, revolutionary drive of Jesus Christ! They all made a difference one day, one word, one action at a time. We can do the same!
- Get involved! Instead of complaining, get educated on the issues you’re passionate about. Then go find a way to bring them to the stage, whether it’s creating a documentary about the plight of fatherlessness in the African American community like Janks Morton, or bringing to light the positive impacts of African American marriage like Lamar and Ronnie Tyler!
BMWK, leave a comment about what drives you as a U.S. Citizen…then tell me how you’re going to get involved and make a change in your life and the lives of those in your immediate surroundings! Let’s stop complaining and make that change!
God bless!

Harriet Hairston is a woman who slips and slides in and out of labels (military officer, human resource manager, minister, mentor, spoken word artist and teacher). The only ones that have stuck so far are “wife” and “mother” (the most important in her estimation). The rest have taught her well that only what she does for Christ will last. There is one more permanent label she holds: ”author.” You can purchase her first book, ”Who Are You?“ simply by clicking on the link. You can also contact her at harriet_hairston@yahoo.com.
