Late Night Me-Time

sleepwoman

by Tara Pringle Jefferson

Let me start by asking you a question: What time do you go to bed? 10 p.m.? 11? Midnight?

“Don’t ask,” you mutter.

Later?

“Yup.”

Like how late?

“2, 3 a.m., depending on the day.”

Geez, why do you stay up so late?

You take a deep sigh. “Because.”

Because what?

“Because. It’s the only time of day I have to myself.”

What do you mean?

“Once my day starts, I’m constantly on the move. Getting kids up, dressed, fed, to daycare, doing activities, reading stories, filling sippy cups, wiping poopy butts, whatever! When the kids finally go to bed at night, then it’s finally my time. Time to check e-mail, to update Facebook, shower. It sucks that I stay up so late, but when you don’t get enough personal time during the day, you do what you have to do.”

Ahh, I see.

You take a deep breath. “I’m not complaining – really, I’m not. I love my kids and spending time with them is great. It’s just…at some point during the day, I need to turn it off and just be…me.”

Well, that makes sense.

Anyone out there feels like I’m speaking to you? Do you crave that late-night me time?

Yes you are speaking directly to me. I have always been a late night person -2:00am, 3:00am and sometimes later. My husband is the total opposite; he is ready to shut it down around 9 and by 10 he’s turning the lights OUT and TV OFF. Most of my family & friends are not late night people so it’s just me. I justified it when I was pursuing my degrees because I used that time to concentrate, complete assignments & to study. Honestly, I get irritated when my kids are up after a certain time moving about the house. Lights are off, kitchen is closed! GO TO BED! Tara you hit the nail on the head when you said, “It’s just…at some point during the day, I need to turn it off and just be…me.” Unfortunateley, self inflicted sleep deprivation catches up to me and I get really exhausted during the day and I feel nonproductive. But do I stop and decide on my own to hit the sack earlier- around 11:00pm or 12midnight- NOPE. Of course there are studies that prove that the lack of proper amount of sleep will affect your health in several areas and I can attest to that.

I am in my mid 40′s now and I need to make some changes for the good of my quality of life.

I do, but it seems as if I am always too exhausted to actually enjoy it.

HOW DID YOU GET IN MY HEAD?!!! Tara that is me down to the tee only when im nursing my daughter to sleep i end up falling asleep too for like 20 min and then i get up and put my 5y.o. to bed and once i do that its so my time. i tidy up and watch a bit of t.v. facebook, read, catch up on bmwk whatever. i look forward to staying up till 2 because no one else is up with me and when my hubby gets home i go to bed then. this is my time to watch stuff that i would never watch with baby hannah awake. however i am exhausted around 2pm or so and when hannah goes down for her nap i am right there with her.!!!!

I do stay up late sometimes when my energy level permits and I have taken a nap during the day b/c that is the only time my entire house is quiet. NO TV, no kids, no lights just me and whatever I like to do. And mostly it is just quiet time to read, journal or just catch up on whatever my hearts desires. When This happens NAPS are always required but at least I got my quiet time in.

this describes me to the ‘T’… I stay up late to have some me time… I often find that I lose myself if I dont. And though I may suffer in the morning to start the process all over again… its very much worth it.

This is me! I treasure the late night time for myself I squeeze out after getting the kiddios to bed. I used to try to read at that time, but frequently I am too tired to focus on a book, so I end up watching television, or taking a bath.

YES YES YES, u r definitely talking to me!!!! I watch the news and read my latest Essence & “O” magazine. If I attempt any of the above while my 12 & 4 year olds are awake, I get pissed with them for the constant interruptions!!!! I really crave MY ME TIME!!!!

GIRL do we know each other…….lol!!! I am so there! I usually go to bed around 4 lately b/c I feel like I need time to myself. After I put the kids to bed, I have to clean up, spend time with hubby and run my jewelry business (making pieces and all that jazz….lol). So, by the time I’m done with that, I still need some ME time to just RELAX. My hubby and I would always make it a habit to go to bed together but lately I haven’t been able to do that. I would jut lay in bed wide awake thinking. I started to feel guilty about it but what else can I do to keep myself sane?

OMG! yes this is me. After taking care of the kids, housework, school, husband, I sooo need that time just for me. My husband is a done deal before 930p. So when everybody is asleep, I too watch t.v, read, watch youtube videos, etc. I know that I will be exhausted the next day, but I need that time just to do me. Sleep deprivation is real, it wrecks havoc on your health, and I have experienced the aftermath many a times. But in actuality, there is no other time to take to yourself, so you take it when you can.

I am always up late because that is the only time I have to myself…to wind down and just take in the day and give more reflection to God. I am up sometimes past 1:00 am.
