The Man Behind The Black Marriage Negotiations Video

The Root has a very interesting interview with the man that created the Black Marriage Negotiations Video. You know, the one that has gone completely viral gaining almost half million Youtube views and has sparked countless imitations, debates and articles on the web. What’s most interesting about 40 year old Darroll Lawson is that he’s a happily married father of three and not a 23 year old youngster that’s been stung by love.

From The Root:

Darroll Lawson, 40, an information-technology consultant living in Atlanta, created the video to drive traffic to his website, PhilosoG, where he and his friend Billy Briggs talk about “empowering men to empower families.”

But since the launch last month of his animated video, which features a professional black woman ticking off a list of outrageous relationship requirements to a bewildered black man, Lawson says that he has received offers from Hollywood, been approached by ABC’s The View and conducted interviews with Essence, radio host Tom Joyner and the Associated Press.

The attention has helped Lawson promote his show, and he hopes it will help him find a publisher for a book addressing the same issues confronted by his video. The Root spoke with Lawson about his inspiration, how his wife — who is black — reacted to the video and his thoughts on Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls.

Yeah, I was wondering who the creator was as well. Nice to to hear from the author of the short.

I was suprised that Mr. Lawson was a happilay married man, but I think some of what he is saying is relevant.

  • This is unacceptable!

One million thumbs down! I’m shocked and outraged that this website in particular would feature this anti-black video on its website.

    It’s ANTI-BLACK and ANTI-HUMAN because:

It stereotypes African Americans as unable to form healthy families: DO WE REALLY NEED ANYMORE negative images or caricatures of our ancestors on display for the world to see? I thought the point of your website was to increase access to resources, and positive imagery? You’re doing the exact opposite by endorsing this person.

This video like the majority of MODERN AA produced media denigrates black women. It blames black women for their singlehood. It also demeans black men as being cowardly and simp like.

I’m tired of the apathy, misery, and rampant demagoguery and distortion of black women: the creator of our ethnic group. I’m tired of the distortions of black men. When are people going to say enough is enough?

This website needs a full time board certified psychologist who has studied African American psychology, and has a track record of helping multi-cultural families through crisis. I can not imagine ANY psychologist worth their salt endorsing this insanity…

*yawn* another negative portrayal of Black women. Will Mr. Lawson be opening up for Steve Harvey on his upcoming book tour?
