Does Marriage Improve With Age?

In a recent Psychology Today article Drs. Charles and Elizabeth Schmitz discuss if marriage gets better with age.  They definitely believe that it does and give us 5 great reason why.

Excerpt:

Reason 1 - Imagine spending 30 or more years with someone!  You know everything about them – their strengths, their weaknesses, their hot buttons, their likes and dislikes, and their darkest secrets.  You are each other’s best friends and support each other in everything you do.  Our research around the world supports this simple notion – familiarity does NOT breed contempt amongst people who deeply love each other.   Familiarity and intimacy with someone you love is one of the greatest joys on Earth according to those we have interviewed who have been married for 30-77 years.

Reason 2 - We can report that long-term, happy, and successfully married couples would rather spend time with their spouse than anyone else.  There should be nothing mysterious about this finding.  The longer you are married, the more you get comfortable being with the one you love. Spending time WITH their spouse is much more rewarding than spending their time alone.

My pastor always says that, "You don't have youth and wisdom at the same time." With that said if your youth is growing further away in your rear view mirror of life and you're drawing nearing, entering a deeper more intimate relationship with wisdom, your appreciation for your partner heightens and subsequently marriage improves with that wisdom. So I might venture to say that if you embrace wisdom your marriage will most definitely get better with age. www.ruleyourwife316.com

i have been married for 18 yrs. and i can attest to the fact if one allows god to be first and the practice of submission(submit one to another) it gets sweeter as the days go by.

We have been married for 44 years, and I completely agree with the conclusions of the study. We got married when we were 19 and 20. I recall at our 21st anniversary, we proclaimed that "We have been married longer than anything else in our lives." Now that has endured to 44 years and counting. We are looking forward to a big celebration at 50 years. Our joy and happiness continue to grow. We are excited about what lies ahead!
