Prayer For Our Marriages

By Tiya Cunningham-Sumter

Once a month my church family comes together for corporate prayer. During this time we pray for our church, the community and each family that each member represents. As we prayed this month, I considered the current state of our communities, marriages and families and we need prayer. I recognize this post will not be for all, but for those that frequently pray and know the power of prayer, this one is for you.

Prayer for troubled marriages

Heavenly Father, please bless the couples who are struggling and dealing with challenging times. Remind them of the promises they made to each other and before You. Let them know there isn’t a situation You God can’t fix. Please keep these couples focused on repair and not stuck in brokenness. Allow them to open their hearts and minds to see each other’s needs and not just their own needs. Please repair their foundations and heal their hearts, so they can move forward. Please allow them to learn from the trials and grow stronger together. Father, please allow each spouse to be swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to wrath.

Amen

Prayer for newlyweds

Heavenly Father, bless the newness of these unions. Help these couples to build a strong foundation for their marriage that will not be  broken. Keep them focused on each other. Let them know the value of compromise and selfless love. Help them to fight the urges that can creep into their minds so they don’t bring destruction into their homes. Surround them with people who love and support them and will help protect their marriage. Equip them with the tools they need to endure the ups and downs of their relationship. Help them to always bring the best out of one another. Please protect these marriages from infidelity, separation, and divorce.

Amen

Prayer for husbands

Heavenly Father, please give husbands and fathers the strength to provide for, protect and love their wives. Please lift him up when he feels discouraged and defeated. Encourage him to stay on the right path and put his family first. Surround him with positive people that will uplift him. Help him to seek You as he makes those important decisions for his family. Allow him to be a great example of manhood for his children.  Equip him with everything he needs to be the man, husband and father You have called him to be. Help him to be the husband his wife needs.

Amen

Prayer for wives

Heavenly Father, bless the wives and mothers as they take care of households and raise children. Help her to be a positive light in her home. Encourage her when her burdens feel heavy or she feels overwhelmed. Surround her with people that love and support her. Help her to be that helpmate to her spouse. Please help her to be the wife her husband needs. Remind her that through You, she can do all things.

Amen

Prayer for marriages in general

Heavenly Father, please watch over our marriages and families. Protect us from all the ills that can sneak into our homes, like infidelity, lack of trust and poor financial planning. Help us to put love, energy and time into our spouses and let us never feel or see it as a burden. Help us to please our mates and be easy to love. Surround us with others that love us and support our marriages. Help us to seek You when we struggle. Please keep our focus away from things that threaten the health of our marriage. Remind us that we are one, on the same team. Help us to display a healthy love, so our children know what one looks like. Please help us to stay committed.

Amen

BMWK, what prayer would you add for our marriages?

Prayer for our children (daily), their teachers and everyone they come in contact with. Prayer for wisdom in decision making. Prayer for God’s love to guide me more than PRIDE.

I would add, Lord Heavenly Father, give husbands and wives hearts of servitude…To truly love on one another we have to be willing to take care of one another…Create in us hearts to serve our mates first. If this is done by both partners, what would be the argument? Bless us Father in the name of Jesus, Amen….. Thank you sooo much for these prayers, much needed….

These are really awesome prayers. There are so many marriages under attack right now that could benefit from these daily. Thanks for sharing.

Too late. Separated and headed to divorce court. :-(

    • Tiya

Janetolumide, I will still be praying for you.

I’ve personally witnessed and been a part of many marriages headed for divorce court who are now happily married. You continue to believe until there is no reasons to believe and being separated isn’t a reason to believe

I can always use greater wisdom…to recognize when I’m following God’s will for my marriage/family and when I’m following my will.

Blessings on the people and families who are not able to stay together…..I ask that God will heal and keep you and your family….God Bless…..

Bless you Tiya for having the spirit to intercede on behalf of many folks that you don’t know. It is obvious your words are powerful in that you spoke Janetolumide. She’s separated, but she still believed your prayer enough to respond. This tells me she has hope.

    Great post.
