MOVIE TRAILER: “The Help” Starring Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times. Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

BMWK family, are you planning on seeing this film? Did you read the book? What did you think?

Yep, this should be very good. I have the book, so I better read up before it’s released.

Read the book… Movies tend to ruin good books.I will be taking a pass.

OK, I read the book…trailer looks like it changed the story line a bit like with Secret Life of Bees, not sure I am going to like that, but I will be in the theatres to support.
Its funny I read the book last spring, and ended up flying into Jackson for my cousin’s wedding – half of them went to Jackson State.

I was entertained by the story, but did I like it? Hrmmmmm… Something about it just rubs me the wrong way. I think I was able to tolerate it because I wasn’t alive in the 1960s to know whether or not the author captured the true voice of black women during this time. I think some aspects of this book were oversimplified and too saccharine.
