Travel Tuesday: Staycation Month on BMWK Continues…
Staycation month continues on BlackandMarriedwithKids.com featuring local events in the DMV that are perfect for your family vacation/staycation. On Saturday June 25th & Sunday June 26th, DC’s #1 food, fun & music festival returns…the Safeway BBQ Battle!
The Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle celebrates its 19th year of great food, music, and entertainment on Pennsylvania Avenue between 9th & 14th streets. Celebrating the art of barbecue, community spirit and family, the fun kicks off both days at 11am with cooking demonstrations, free barbecue and grilled food samples and live music on three stages. The Pepsi-Max Lays Soundstage is taken over by some of Go-Go music’s favorite performers. EU takes the stage at 2:30 pm and Go-Go’s newest stars Mambo Sauce keep the party going at 4:00pm.
The Godfather of Go-Go himself, Chuck Brown, graces the stage at 7:30 pm for a legendary performance. Sunday is funky R&B day with performances by Suttle Thoughts (4:30 pm) and the Junkyard Band (6 pm).
Kids will have a blast at the barbecue battle. They will enjoy free interactive exhibits and games like rock climbing, NBA Nation, Blackberry Playbook and face painting.
The weekend is all about barbecue and the country’s best barbecue chefs will compete for the title of National Pork Champion and $40,000 in cash prizes. You can bring Grandma’s secret barbecue sauce recipe and enter the Smoke Signals BBQ Sauce contest. You never know – you might have the winning recipe.
Avoid the long lines and buy your admission tickets online and save 20% on adult tickets. At the gate tickets are $12 for adults, online they are $10. Tickets for kids are $5 at the gate and online. When you buy a ticket you will be supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of DC. To date the event has raised $1.2 million to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of DC.
