Disney Living Challenge Week 2: Skin Care All Year Long

We’re back with week 2 of the Disney Living Challenge. If you missed the first challenge last week we encourage you to go back and check it out. We’re creating healthy lifestyle habits in ways that we hope will be fun for your kids? We’ve partnered with Disney Living to explore fun ways to do this.  Through this partnership with Disney Living we’re going to bring you 12 weeks of challenges that will hopefully assist and inspire you to make healthy changes for your children. During the process we’ll share great information (and products too) that can help you along the way.

For week 2 we want to challenge you to take care of your kids skin all year long. I’ve heard it and seen it in many times where parents of African American children thought they didn’t have to protect their children’s skin in the same way that other parents do. Well not only do you need to protect their skin but we need to get them trained to protect it as well so it’s a lifestyle change that gos with them as they grow.

Our skin care regimen for the kids goes like this:

  • Of course plenty, plenty, plenty of lotion. (You know the deal)
  • When it was open we went to our community pool a lot! Sunscreen was mandatory not only for the kids but for us too. Ronnie gets sunburned and the kids will too if we don’t prepare properly. What’s funny is that sunburns often happen on days that aren’t extremely hot but the sun is just out on us. Then the next thing we know we’re home and somebody’s skin is pealing. Experts say that you should beware of midday or tropical suns. The darker your skin is you have a lower risk of getting sun burn or later developing skin cancer but you should take the precaution anyway. Experts also say for those with darker skin, skin cancer is less likely but more deadly!
  • Since moving to Georgia we’ve had to step up our game when it comes to insect repellent. We had mosquitoes and bugs in Maryland but there is an entirely different breed of insect down here. These insects were raised on Georgia peaches or something but they are on steroids and they don’t play. The first week we moved here we sent the kids into the back yard to play and they came back with lumps (not just bites). Since then insect repellent is a normal part of our regimen when it’s outdoor playtime or if they’re going to be out for extended periods of time.

How can we get our kids to be proactive with protecting their skin while they are young so that they will carry these habits into adulthood? Disney Living has a great line of products with characters on them like the Phineas and Ferb sprays, gels and lotions above so that can be one way. Another way is to talk to them, on their level about why they need to use these products and the importance of having healthy, great looking skin when they are older.

BMWK family, how do you care for your child’s skin? Do you have a daily routine? Do your  kids like to get skin care products applied to them?
