REVIEW: BET’s 2011 Black Girls Rock

After last year’s Black Girls Rock ceremony, I wanted to see more. To see images like this all the time. To see women who looked like me who were literally changing the world. Kind of like the argument for why Black History Month should be abolished. I didn’t want to have to wait for one night of positive programming. I wanted it 24/7/365.

But alas, Black Girls Rock is still enough to have me glide through the rest of the year with an added boost in confidence. This year’s show did not disappoint. I watched the whole thing and was incredibly inspiring by the big names and the undercover agents who decided to use their influence to make a difference. Check out the highlights of this year’s show in the slideshow below.

They gave appropriate recognition to Beverly Bond, founder of Black Girls Rock, during the ceremony, but I’d love to see BET raise her profile throughout the whole year. How cool would it be for BET to produce a six-part series on Black Girls Rock. Who are these girls? What do they learn? How are their lives changed?

It was very empowering, but I must admit I turned at 9 p.m. to watch the season premiere of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" - LOL...not empowering but entertaining nonetheless...

Is that an indication that BGR didn't contain enough compelling elements to keep your interst? That's a very interesting statement and I'm sure it's probably a shared act by many due to the attraction of the Atlanta Housewives content.

I don't have cable so I appreciate being able to read the highlights, see the pics of the award recipients, and view the video performances...btw, was Crown Royal the sole sponsor? Every video clip began and ended with it's ad for "Crown Royal Black"...that was obviously a deliberate & deplorable choice.
