Actor Sherman Hemsley Passes Away at 74

Growing up in the 70s and 80s, you probably got many laughs from character George Jefferson of All in the Family and then his own spin off, The Jeffersons. Actor Sherman Hemsley has made it to the deluxe apartment in the sky. He passed away at the age of 74 in his home in El Paso, Texas.

Hemsley’s acting resume extends longer than most, making many cameo appearances in other African American focused television shows like Sister, Sister, The Hughleys, House of Payne, Wayans Brothers and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. His characters always promised comedic relief, even in the most tense of situations.

TMZ broke the news and fans from all over the world are expressing their condolences via social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. We have truly lost an icon. Although he lives behind no wife or children, our thoughts and prayers are with Hemsley’s closest family and friends.

Although I usually watch serious programs on television, I still look at reruns of the Jeffersons and Amen every morning. His humor was always clean and tasteful, something the whole family could watch. Sherman Hemsley will indeed remain an icon of comedy, and he will be missed. He was so very FUNNY! I know he will continue to bring joy and happiness in Heaven. May his family and friends find peace in knowing that his legacy was one of making others happy.

U will forever be missed Mr. Hemsley. I usually dont respond to these types of things or give a comment however because I was a lil youngin and it was as though I knew him well and he lived down the street. I feel like we were family. I still watch the show till this day. R.I.P. Sir.

You know the WALK will live on, Knowing Television they're getting ready for a marathon right NOW. Bring it nothing like an all day laugh

I agree, that WALK is classic and I'm sure that they will be playing marathons all of the place. No matter how old it gets, I can never get enough of watching some shows. Shows like the Jeffersons, Cosby show, etc., never seem to get old to me. I can watch them today like they are brand new and they are several decades old, but I guess it's probably because many of the shows on tv today are complete filth and refuse to have any REAL representation of black people. They definitely don't make shows like the Jeffersons and the like anymore. RIP Mr. Hemsley.

I grew up with the Jefferson's too and I wake up to the Jefferson's and Amen every weekday morning. My heart is filled with grief - I must say that you are in a better place than me. :-)TO BE ABSENT IN THE BODY IS TO BE PRESENT WITH THE LORD! (kjv 2 Cor 5:8) I send my prayers and condolences to family, friends and fans! GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!!! -RIP

I send my prayers and condolences to Sherman Hemsley family and friends. I watch him every morning for two hours, 2 segments of "The Jeffersons" and then 2 segments of "Amen." I always think what a talented actor, with all the love he put into his acting, I know he was twice that loving person to his family and close friends. Thanks for sharing your gift with the world Mr. Hemsley, you made this world a better place. Thanks God for your angel.

My heart seemed to have skipped a beat when my brother of only a year older than me called me and told me we lost "George" from the Jeffersons. I, too, was saddened as he was, I could hear it in his voice. I have a few seasons of "The Jeffersons" to recall him by. Whenever I wanted a good laugh I would pop in one of those tapes of the Jeffersons. He made a person laugh and be happy. If you were having a bad day and needed cheering up you can count on one of the episodes to do just that.
