Rapper/Actor, Common, Puts Movie’s Message Before Lead Role

While you may be used to hearing the sounds of Common on your radio or within your music collection, this rapper and actor has been making his way through the movie industry. Appearing in films such as American Gangster, Just Wright and more recently television series, Single Ladies and Hell on Wheels, Common has made yet another on screen performance in the new movie, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, releasing on August 15.

In the movie, Common plays Green’s soccer coach, Coach Cal, a role that writer-director, Peter Hedges, felt was too small for such a “huge star.”

“I told Peter, “˜The story has so much heart, and I love doing things that can really inspire people,’” says Common. “My philosophy is to be a part of quality projects. It doesn’t have to be a lead. I just want to do great work.”

Even so, he’s still looking to make headlines–outside of his name being the focal point of an invitation to a White House poetry event in 2011–and is set to appear along with Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg and others in the thriller “Now You See Me.” Outside of movies, he continues to make music after recently signing with Kanye’s West’s, G.O.O.D. Music label.

We need more positive portrayals like this, but that is stating the obvious. We need media and film executives to stop worrying about "alienating white viewers." We need more of them to say that if it alienates some viewers, then they don't need them, because this is quality programming.
