Evonne and Deon Derrico of Las Vegas, NV have a 7-year-old daughter, a 3-year-old son and 1-year-old twin boys. On September 6 their family grew by five when Evonne gave birth to a healthy set of quintuplets without the use of any fertility drugs.
They always wanted a big family, but didn’t expect for it to grow so much so soon. The couple initially thought they were having four kids, only to discover two days later that Evonne was carrying five. Deon revealed to TODAY’S Savannah Guthrie that multiples run in the family and that his mother miscarried triplets before he was born. Dr. John Elliot, an obstetrician at Banner Desert Medical Center in Arizona where the quintuplets were born, says natural births like this are extraordinarily rare and chances are only one in a couple million.
Our babies were healthy and the doctor said that we proved him wrong time and time again. This whole experience has been one miracle after another,” says Deon. “It humbles me to know that people wish to be in our position.
With nine children at home, Evonne’s greatest concern is making sure they all get the attention they deserve. Since coming home, the family is doing very well and is adjusting to the sudden change. Their oldest, seven-year-old Darian, is pleased to have her siblings with her. Following tradition in Deon’s family, all of the children have names starting with “D.”
“We’re all sleeping,” Evonne Derrico told Guthrie. “We’re all in the room, one big happy family. We’re on a schedule. We have to be on a schedule. It starts right now. So everything is going good. We are all getting enough sleep and it’s working out amazingly well.”
