The Name Game

By Aja Dorsey Jackson
Before my husband and I got married, I remember going back and forth for a few days with myself over what I wanted as my married name. At the time my husband told me he pretty much didn’t care. I ended up dropping my maiden name completely and taking my husband’s last name as my own based primarily upon the fact that I like the way my middle name sounds with my first name.
Now if you are actually looking at my name under the title of this …

Little Things Mean A Lot

I lost my sense of taste and smell this weekend.  Imagine my misery.  I ate and was not satisfied.  I turned the humidifier on and could not smell the Vicks.  It made me think about the little things I take for granted.
For example, my son always asks for a kiss, then proceeds to request a hug right after that.  Sometimes it irks me, because he asks at the worst possible time…like when I have to go to the bathroom, or when I’m rushing out the door to get to work.  …

Do You Take Your Partner For Granted?

By Tara Pringle Jefferson
This weekend, in honor of Sweetest Day (yes, Lamar, I’m fully aware that is a country, Midwestern holiday and no one else outside of my neck of the woods - or at least the Great Lakes - even knows what it is…lol), my husband and I went to a local restaurant to celebrate.
After we took our seats in the waiting area, a hoard of high school kids, dressed up in their homecoming outfits, poured in. The girls shivered in their pretty-but-too-skimpy-for-mid-October dresses, …

It’s Report Card Time!!

The kids have been in school for a few weeks now. And by now they should have received an interim report card. If you were to receive an interim report based on how involved you have been in your child’s education, what grade would you receive?
A - Very Involved: You read and sign daily agendas and other written communications from the teacher, attend conferences, work with the children at home with reading and homework assignments, volunteer, attend field trips, stress the importance of education at home
B - …

If You’re Scared, Say You’re Scared

by Harriet Hairston
You’ve got to watch the video to understand where I’m coming from. I’m in the same position as Indiana Jones. Only, I’m scared like a little punk, y’all. I can’t even lie. I’m stuck in between what was, looking at what will be, and for some reason, I can’t find the path in between. Oh, don’t get me wrong…I BELIEVE with all that is in me. But for some reason, success and taking the next step evades me. What’s holding me back? What’s preventing me from taking the …

Louisiana: Interracial Couple Denied Marriage License By Justice of The Peace

by Lamar Tyler
You’ll never guess what’s going on down in LA. Let me preface this whole deal by saying this happened this month of this year. I don’t want you thinking this was an old civil rights story from the sixties. On October 6th a Justice of The Peace in a Louisiana Parrish told a couple that he would not marry them because they were an interracial couple, and his reasoning…. of course he’s doing it for the kids. Check this out from AP:
A Louisiana justice of the peace said …
