Hollywood is awake. And they have paid attention. According to Shadow and Act, the upcoming movie, Birth of a Nation, which chronicles the slave uprising led by Nat Turner, not only received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, but ended a bidding war at a Sundance record of $17.5 million when Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired its worldwide rights. An update includes an additional bid of $20 million by both Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios and Netflix.

“It brings me immense joy and excitement to welcome the Searchlight team into our family. I embrace their shared passion for this film and its potential impact on our country and the world,” said director, writer, producer and star Nate Parker in a press release.

It’s no surprise to BMWK, as we reported in early December that we thought this film would make an indelible mark. Given the current racial climate in America, the film is both timely and relevant.

The movie is also receiving Oscar buzz for 2017 and the cast couldn’t be happier. After the Sundance release, Twitterverse was apparently abuzz.

Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.

BMWK, how do you plan to support this film?

Southside with You Feature

I love romance, plain and simple. So when a good romance flick comes along, I make sure to catch it one way…theater, or another…Netflix, Redbox, YouTube.

However, there are very few first night, theater worthy chick flicks that have gleaned my hard earned dollars. Well, rumor has it that based on the stellar reviews from the Sundance Film Festival, one such movie is on the way.

It is based on the first date of our President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama. According to critics, Southside with You, starring Parker Sawyers and Tika Sumpter, “could stand alone as a sweet, mature drama with layers of social and racial issues, family dynamics and, yes — romance.”

The Daily Beast calls it an “adorable tale” and goes so far as to say it has “a first kiss so hot it made theatergoers at Sundance melt in the aisles.”

As for Sumpter, she had this to say about the film, ““I wanted to see somebody who looked like me falling in love up there.”

While there is no scheduled release date, you can check out the trailer below.

Here are what some others had to say.

This movie is for sure making my theater worthy first night list!

BMWK, could a movie be made about your first date with your spouse?
