3 Ways to Keep Peace with Mama and ‘Em this Christmas

We all know the reason for the season, even though at moments we sometimes fail in practicing and spreading the love, joy, and peace that those around us should experience.

It can get quite stressful overspending and spending hours running around looking for deals. Don’t even get me started on decorating the home and meal preparation. It can be overwhelming. Not to mention any family drama that usually surfaces at this time.

As a result, many of us feel the pressure and respond as such when our buttons are pushed. No one can push our buttons more than family. If we think about it even further, we’re still in control of our buttons and must exercise that power, especially during the holidays.

Remove Negative Feelings

In order to enjoy the season, as it should be enjoyed, we must remove any negative feelings we may have about certain family members or in-laws. The season isn’t about us or them. It’s about celebrating the birth of Christ and making family memories that will last a lifetime.

Thinking about why we’re gathering and honoring those family members who are no longer with us will definitely help to shift our focus. Families have to value the time they have to spend together and not waste it on things that don’t matter and cause confusion.

Give to the Needy

Another great way to maintain some family peace is by giving. Giving is good for the soul. Think of those who are less fortunate. Volunteering or even donating items so others can enjoy the holidays will again remind families of what’s most important.

Practice Gratitude

Peace will also come when families practice gratitude and count their blessings. I’m sure your list of things to be grateful for could go on and on. Think about it – a roof over your head, food to eat, family whom you love, even when they are driving you crazy, friends who support you, and a job or the ability to take care of your home no matter how tight it may get.

Again, that list continues to grow. There is usually more to be grateful for than there is to complain about. Keeping our focus on how God has blessed us will definitely bring a sense of peace into your home.

We can add extra stress to ourselves during the holidays by doing too much. We have to set spending limits and yes, even eating limits. Being realistic about your budget and what you can and can’t do will eliminate the pressure you feel to buy elaborate gifts or even purchase for everyone you know. We must set firm limits for ourselves and not feel guilty about it.

Christmas is the one time of the year we should set aside our family differences and choose peace instead.

BMWK, Merry Christmas to you and your families.
