I have always been that girl who needs a good deal of personal space.
I don’t have commitment issues and I am perfectly capable of deep love; I just don’t want anyone—not even my husband—around me all the time.
Sounds harsh? I promise I am a really nice person. Sometimes I just need to be alone so I can collect my thoughts.
Not much has changed over the years. I mean, now I am married with two small kids; but, aside from that, I am the same girl from Brooklyn who really needs to be alone sometimes.
My husband gets that about me and I don’t think our relationship would work if he didn’t. Frankly, he benefits from having alone time, too.
Now, despite my desire for quiet time, I still love spending time with my man. I love being in his warm embrace and I love the fact that after all these years, we can still crack each other up. What we have is real. We do some things together; we do some things apart; and, what we have works.
Whether you’re the type of person who never likes to be alone, or, like me, having that alone time is crucial, I believe there are some things you should do without your husband.
Being together is awesome, but when you experience things apart it can actually help you regain perspective and allow your relationship to grow.
If you ask me, the secret to a happy marriage is one where you do plenty of things together AND plenty of things on your own.
So, here are 5 things you really need to do without your husband.
Travel
I am not suggesting that you go to Hawaii for 2 weeks without your husband, but I do think taking a trip alone is a great idea.
- Go on a weekend retreat with your friends
- Visit family across country
- Take a trip alone to hang out at the casino and enjoy spa treatments
Take some time to do whatever you want to do without having to think about anyone’s needs but your own. You will return home feeling rejuvenated to the arms of someone who misses you a lot.
Eat out
Sometimes you just need to enjoy a nice meal and a glass of wine alone.
I enjoy eating out with my husband, but spending time with my own thoughts once in a while is nice.
You don’t need to do it often, but when you have a chance to enjoy that meal alone, make it at a place you love.
And if eating alone just makes you super uncomfortable, ask a friend to come along. This will give you time to enjoy a great email and catch up with someone you love.
Kick it with your girls
What wife doesn’t need a good time out with her girls? This is just a great chance to connect with other women, talk about life, enjoy good company, and relax.
Whenever I spend time with women I care about, I go home feeling reenergized and happy. My husband loves it.
Visit the spa
I know a spa day just isn’t in the budget sometimes, but it is worth saving up for. A day of pampering and relaxation helps you melt the stress away.
No matter how much you love your husband, he’s not that interested in chillin’ with the stressed out version of you all the time.
If he’s smart, he’ll want you to step away for some pampering as much as you want it. And if you can’t swing the spa, pack a lunch on a nice day and go relax by the beach or a lake on your own. That can be pretty relaxing, too.
Staying home
Can you get your husband and kids to leave the house so you can just spend the day home alone? Make sure they help you clean before it happens.
Home should be your sanctuary, but many of us never get to spend time at home alone. Try to make this happen and spend a day at home doing whatever you want. It’s a beautiful thing.
