5 Things to Consider When Choosing a School For Your Child

A great school is so much more than fresh paint and new computers. Don’t get caught up in thinking that a school with well-behaved children is a good school. Good behavior does not mean that students are actually learning. Many parents get caught up in the physical appearance of the school without considering other options. Look for these 5 things when choosing a school:

  1. Project-Based Learning – Students who participate in project-based learning are more likely to develop critical thinking skills. Critical thinking is the ability to solve problems and evaluate new information. It is the ability to imagine multiple sides of an issue. Project-based learning takes learning off the page. It’s like learning in 3D.
  2. Strong math & science program – In general students in America are struggling with math & science. Math is sequential and if certain lessons are missed early on, it creates a negative domino affect for your child later. A good math & science program will use manipulatives (blocks, legos, etc.) and it will move students away from their dependence on the calculator.
  3. A healthy balance of new & experienced teachers – Trust me when I say experience matters in the classroom. If your child is in front of all new teachers, your child is basically a little guinea pig. While new teachers mean well, they have the latest education research under their belts and they are often oozing with energy, an experienced teacher is like a great orchestra conductor who can manage the environment and pick up on subtle cues to really help your child. An experienced teacher in the classroom is like a parent with multiple children.  A good school has a mix of both new & experienced teachers.
  4. Opportunities for extra-curricular activities – Whether its sports, chess or a spelling bee, you want your child to have learning experiences outside of the classroom. Even in primary school, your child should have access to after school activities. At the primary level, you also want your child to be able to attend field trips regularly.
  5. Active Parent Organization – If there is an active Parent Organization (often called the PTA or PTSO), the quality of the school is usually better. The same way that we have three branches of our government, a school has multiple branches and if all of those branches – administration, parents and teachers work together, it ensures accountability and consistency in a child’s life. An active parent organization will also help you to become a better parent by putting you in a community with other parents who share your challenges. You do not want to be a lone ranger when it comes to advocating for your child.

Education in America is very competitive. Be sure to start investigating at least a year & a half in advance before your child needs to enroll. Many of the best schools (particularly private) have wait lists and there are often some testing requirements that must be met a full year in advance.
