6 Environmentally Friendly Wedding Reception Ideas

I recently attended a venue’s open house for upcoming brides to see what’s new for spring. I was surprised by the earthly effects of the décor which was very elegant. Your reception should incorporate your favorite things and if you are a “green” bride, then the following ideas should inspire you to try on your day.

  1. Consider using real china instead of plastic plates and flatware to reduce waste. Plus dishes will add an elegant touch to your reception.
  2. Incorporate linen napkins instead of paper ones to cut back on the amount of trash to dispose of. Most venues carry linens or you can check with your wedding planner. If you have to use paper products, make sure they are made from recycled paper.
  3. Use earthly décor in the table decorations.   On your tables host a cluster of votive candles, small vases filled with single flowers, and small apothecary vases filled with fresh greenery. Another idea is branches sprayed gold or silver with tiny votives hanging from them. Collect branches from any trees that have been cut down or trimmed  in your yard or ask friends or family. The candles do not have to be one color, feel free to mix and match depending on your color scheme.
  4. There are several options for the inexpensive, earth friendly party favors. Instead of throwing rice at the departing couple, throw paper airplanes with well wishes printed on them. Make sure to use recycled paper. How about homemade pinwheels like the ones  we used to love as a children. These would look cool when raised and blowing in the wind as a farewell salute. Other options included bubbles to blow at the couple; confetti filled party poppers and sparklers. You can incorporate some or all of these options for your guests.
  5. Consider incorporating organic foods into your dinner. Organic fruits and vegetables are not full of pesticides that run into our water system. Check with your caterer about organic options. If you are having a small reception, visit your local farmers market for locally grown produce.
  6. To cut back on carbons in the air, consider renting a party bus for the wedding party. Having a party bus will ensure the party is on time to the ceremony and you can have additional fun time on the way to the venue!

All of these ideas are budget and environmentally friendly. There is no need to spend thousands of dollars to have an elegant reception. Have fun with your ideas and do not be afraid to try something different, after all the reception is a party that should incorporate you and your spouse’s personality.
