Are Some People Just Not Built for Marriage?

We know that there are people who certainly aren’t marriage material. They are immature, selfish, and just generally bad people, whom you’d be a fool to enter into a lifetime partnership with.

But then, there are good, lovable and caring people, who, for whatever reason, might make great companions but “can’t get right” when it comes to marriage.

This is supposedly the category actress and The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg falls into. Goldberg, who has been married three times previously, recently revealed her aversion to marriage.

“I’m much happier on my own,” she said in an interview with the New York Times. “I can spend as much time with somebody as I want to spend, but I’m not looking to be with somebody forever or live with someone.

“I’m the round peg, and marriage is the square hole. You can’t have a square hole, can you?”

While it may be true that you can’t fit a round peg into a square, we’d like to think the human brain is much more pliable than a wooden peg.

If you’ve been around any toddler, then you know that humans are naturally self-serving. But as that toddler grows older, she is (hopefully) taught to share with friends, play nice with others, control her temper when she doesn’t get her way, etc. Essentially, that child is eventually socialized to coexist well with other humans.

And isn’t that what marriage is? It’s coexisting with another human being. If that is the case, then being able to function in a successful marriage would be much more of a learned behavior, right?

So bringing it back around, are people who are unsuited for marriage and/or poor companions, simply just unwilling to learn how to be a better spouse?

BMWK, what do you think? Are there people who just aren’t made for marriage?
