In the wake of the great heartbreak and tragedy that has plagued our nation with regards to gun violence, we the people cry out. While gun violence has transpired throughout our country, it is the violence in Chicago which seems to be taking up much of the media coverage. The homicide rate is skyrocketing as stories such as Shirley Chambers the mother who lost a fourth child to gun violence and Hadiya Pendleton, a 15 year old student murdered while hanging out in the park with her friends are all over the news.
“The President’s voice is so urgently needed here,” said Rev. Jesse Jackson during a Saturday march, according to The Guardian. “[That alone] would illuminate the condition.”
With reports of a shooting happening this weekend it is difficult to imagine what it might feel like to be one of the thousands of men and women who walk the streets of Chicago. Many of us know that each day we make it home is a blessing in itself; however, hearing countless stories of people who actually never made it home can rattle even the most faithful to their core.
