Atlanta Area College Students Spend Spring Break in Ferguson to Register Voters

Most college students look forward to Spring Break because they get to relax with their friends on a beach or travel to explore a new place to take their mind off of their studies.

These days, it’s too much going on to sit still. For the upcoming Spring Break season, some Atlanta area college students are planning to visit Ferguson, Missouri to help with voter registration.

NAACP officials share that Atlanta student from Clark Atlanta, Morehouse & Spelman colleges will honor the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by helping register voters for the upcoming April 7th election. Participation in this event will help show the community around Ferguson how civic action can lead to a positive change.

CNN reports that Ferguson is two-thirds black. But in a municipal election last November, only 10,222 ballots were cast out of 24,334 registered voters.

The racial tension is still very much present in Ferguson because of the Mike Brown shooting last year. It’s good to know that although we don’t see Ferguson in the media on a constant basis, people are still attempting to do good by the residents by continuing to protest & work for change.
