If you have watched any movie, film or theatre within the last 50 plus years, it would be hard not to have seen or heard of Mr. Ossie Davis or Ms. Ruby Dee. They were a couple who we respected for their gifted talents, long lasting love and even political activism.
Ruby Dee was an actress, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and activist. She was also married to Ossie Davis for 56 years. She has acted in hundreds of projects, won & nominated for many awards. She was most famous for her role in the 1961 film adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun. She’s also made appearances in movies by directors Spike Lee and Tyler Perry. Along with the role in American Gangster cast as Frank Lucas’ mother, she was also the narrator of the 2013 TV Movie Betty and Coretta.
She’s won a Grammy, an Emmy, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and was also awarded a Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award.
This Sunday, October 26th in Atlanta, there will be a screening of Life’s Essentials with Ruby Dee. In this open-letter style documentary, Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis’ rich lives guide their grandson on his personal quest to master lasting love, conscious art, and undying activism.
