Barbershop Owner Promotes Literacy in His Community

When most people think of a black barbershop, they think of a group of men talking, laughing, listening to the radio, and maybe even watching a game on television while they wait to get their hair cut. Well a local barbershop in Palm Beach County, Florida is on a mission to change what people typically expect by creating an environment where young men come to read books.

Reggie Ross, the owner of  Royal Touch Barbershop, is dedicated to promoting literacy in his community. His shop does not have a radio or a television, but instead offers customers an array of books to choose from. And Ross even has his youngest customers read out loud to him while he gives them a haircut, usually sparking a conversation about what’s in the book.

In an interview with WPTV, 35-year-old Ross said, “The barbershop is based on men coming together grooming each other to become better men, and I think books and education is a fundamental part of that.”
