Box Tops Deadline: 5 Ways to Support Your Kid’s Academic Success

Where has this school year gone?  Spring break is right around the corner!  And you know what else is fast approaching –  The Box Tops for Education Submission deadline on March 1st.

March 1st is a very important deadline for many schools across this country.  You see, that is the day that schools need to have their Box Tops submitted (if they want them counted towards the check that will include their Box Tops Earning in April.)

Yes, you read that correctly….I said check.  Through the Box Tops for Education Program, schools can earn money….and I am not talking about chump change.  Schools can earn up to $20,000 per year through this program.  And don’t get it twisted….there are several schools out there earning that money!!  Since Box Tops for Education® started on 1996, they have given schools over $600 Million!!

So, back to the deadline.  You can actually submit Box Tops all year long. But, the Box Tops for Education® Program sends out checks twice a year.  Here is how it works:

Schools are issued two checks per year, in December and April. The December check includes all Box Tops earnings accrued from March 2 to November 1 totaling $20.00 or more. (If the total is less than $20.00, this amount will be carried over and paid in the April check.) The April check includes Box Tops earnings accrued from November 2 through March 1.

Please note: All submissions have to be postmarked by the submission deadlines ( November 1 or March 1) in order to be included in the next check-run.  If the Submission deadline happens to fall on a Sunday, they can have it postmarked on that Friday.

There are thousands of schools across the country participating in this program.  And they are using the money to buy whatever they need most, from books to field trips to playgrounds.  So you know that over the next two weeks….these schools  and concerned parents will be busy counting Box Tops and getting ready for the March 1 deadline…..because they want to do everything in their power to ensure that their kids succeed academically.

And here are 5 Ways to Support Your Kids’ Academic Success

1. You (parents) have to actively take steps to ensure that your kids succeed.  This means getting involved in your child’s education at home and at school.

2. Get concerned about your child’s education.  You are your child’s biggest advocate. Know what is going on the school.  Be willing to not only speak up, but to also roll-up your sleeves and participate in making positive changes happen.

3. Make learning fun for your kids. Find out what your kids are passionate about and incorporate those things into their educational components.  There are opportunities for learning in everything that we do from playing games to cooking meals.

4. Set educational goals for your kids.  The Michigan Department of Education release a Parental Involvement Fact Sheet that says: Parents of high-achieving students set higher standards for their children’s educational activities than parents of low-achieving students.”  Let your kids know that you are expecting their best efforts when it comes to their education.

5. Ensure that your school is participating in the Box Tops for Education®  Program. As I stated before, schools can earn up to $20K per year through this program. That money could be used in a variety of ways to ensure your kids have what they need to succeed at school.  If your school is already participating, find out how you can get involved.  If your school is not participating, then ask them why not and explain to them the benefits of the this program. BMWK – Does your school participate in the Box Tops for Education® program?  If yes, would you consider helping the coordinator count Box Tops before the deadline?  How will your school use the money that they earn?
