In 1994, I was just entering college at Alabama State and Brandi was new on the music scene. I remember bonding with my new besties while jammin’ to “I Wanna Be Down”.
Who is this girl with the braids? Whoever she is, we love her and this song! When the remix came out with Queen Latifah, YoYo, and MC Lyte, they took what was already a certified hit, to a whole new level.
Last night on the Bet Hip Hop Awards, Brandi reunited with these hip hop legends to again make history. While watching them perform, we still know all the words to this song 20 years later. These ladies sound and look just as great as the day they recorded it.
My favorite part was Queen Latifah’s entry, her presence still commands our attention. She has always had a confidence about herself that I love.
Can you believe it’s been 20 years since this song came out? I guess so, because this year I go to my 20th year high school reunion. Here’s a flashback of the original video and then their performance from last night.
