Couples Spotlight: Adrian Bell and Brittany Mitchell (Best Proposal Video)

After watching Adrian’s heartwarming proposal (in the form of miming) to Brittany, we all were immediately enamored by the love these two share. As it should have, the video immediately went viral last week and was appropriately titled “best proposal of 2013”. This young couple made singles and couples everywhere desire that same kind of love. Because the video just wasn’t enough and we wanted to hear more of their story, we went out and got it, just for you. They are both just as wonderful as they seem in the video.  BMWK is honored because Adrian (age 27) and Brittany (age 26) reserved their very first interview for us. If you thought their love looked amazing on video, it’s even more powerful once you hear their remarkable love story. They are absolutely adorable, and just a pleasure to speak with. I don’t doubt their story was designed by God.

BMWK: The BMWK family was so moved by your proposal we just had to learn more about your story. How long have you been together and how did you meet?

Brittany:  We courted for 1 year and dated for 2 years. We have a unique story because we actually went to high school together. Adrian graduated in 2004 and I graduated in 2005. He was in the band and danced and I was class president. We were friends and never thought we would be together (as a couple). Even friends were surprised but then said a relationship between us made sense. After we both graduated, we met back up on MySpace in 2009. Adrian wrote me first, but he had an ex who also found me on MySpace and told me he was married and had all this other stuff going on, so I stepped back.

Adrian: Yeah, she was just crazy.

Brittany: But he reached out to me, because I wasn’t going to say anything else after that. Adrian was damaged and hurt and didn’t want another relationship.  He had a couple of bad relationships. We maintained a friendship and learned each other.

BMWK:  Adrian, how did you know Brittany was the one and that you could trust again?

Adrian: Brittany was the one who got through to my emotions. I was at the drive thru of McDonald’s and I prayed for what I needed in a woman. Brittany took my mind off of everything. It felt natural and right. Because I wanted to stay single as long as possible. I was trying to hold out. But the friendship was so strong. Everyone fell off, but she was the only one still there. I gave in to love. It’s funny because I wrote (back in senior year of high school) on a senior photo to her that we never know what the future holds. It was God.

Brittany: We both have strong foundations in God. I dated other guys who wanted just one thing and Adrian is the one guy who would never pressure me.

BMWK: Adrian, How did you come up with this idea (for the proposal)?

Adrian: I have mimed for 15-20 years (in church and as part of a group, Raar Mime). I wanted to be original. I originally thought about going full mime (suit and face paint) but it didn’t work out. When R. Kelly’s CD Chocolate Factory came out with this song, I knew I would use that song to propose.  I didn’t think it would be all of this response.

Brittany: It was just from the heart.

Adrian: It was just from the heart. God gave me a gift and I had to share my gift.

BMWK: Brittany, what was your initial reaction? I found myself talking to the screen telling you to turn around because you were going to miss the proposal.

(All Laugh)

Brittany: It was funny because I just felt like we were having a really good day. I was putting things on Instagram and we had just been having fun that whole day. We had gone to lunch and the beach (I had that little dress on) and we get to my grandparents’ house and I was wondering why my friends were there. I was overwhelmed. I was really emotional because my mom had passed away 3 years ago from Ovarian Cancer and the fact that she wasn’t there to see this added to my emotions. I was happy and overwhelmed.

BMWK: So sorry for your loss. What is your reaction to how everyone else has responded?

Brittany: It has been amazing. It was on World Star Hip Hop, can’t believe it has gone that far. The responses have been great. People have said things like “you gave me hope” and “because of you I want to fight for my marriage”.

Adrian: One site said they had 4.5 million hits. Other men have stopped me and said “Man, you set the bar high”. I’m in shock because I wasn’t trying to do something viral; I just really love this girl. I love that her mom approved of me. Me and her mom were close. I never thought this would happen. Young people have been sending messages saying “I gave up on love but you have given me so much hope”

Brittany: Yeah, I have received messages saying “big girls get love and they can get a cute guy too”. I want to respond back to everyone who has sent me a message. I have also been hearing from women with low self-esteem.

BMWK: You made love look good. It gave us all hope.

Brittany: It’s like the bible scripture “He who finds a wife finds a …”

Adrian: Finds a GREAT thing.

BMWK:  Tell me this, why was there no traffic on the street? Did you block the streets too?

Brittany:  (laughs) it was so funny that’s usually a busy street.

Adrian: One car started to come down, but it turned off because they saw what I was doing. Brittany’s Grandmother said it was her daughter’s spirit (Brittany’s mom was there) in spirit.

BMWK: What are the goals for your marriage?

Brittany: Keep God first. Family and friends are good, but we have to focus on us, the relationship. We decided to both give 100% each, not 50/50. We support each other, I am going to finish nursing school and he supports me. He is working on plays and I support him. I also plan to write a book to share my story. We both love young people, so maybe a non-profit. And maybe in about 4-5 years, we’ll start our family. His mom wants grandkids soon.

BMWK: What advice would you give to other couples?

Adrian: Communication is key, outside of love. Trust God in your decision making. My parents have been married for 35 years and I take to heart what they say. Especially don’t go to bed mad. What if your partner doesn’t wake up? Our communication is what sets us apart from other couples. We have to stay true to each other and talk about our issues and focus on the relationship. We also hang around other couples.

Brittany: And see what to do as well as what not to do. You have to keep people out of your business. Not everyone means you well. Stay focused.

BMWK: Last question, has a wedding date been set yet?

Brittany: Yes, September 2014 and our colors are teal and copper. September is significant because it is Ovarian Cancer awareness month and the color is teal. So it’s perfect. Adrian actually chose that month.

BMWK: Because of Ovarian Cancer Awareness month?

Brittany: Yes, because of my mom.

Adrian: It was an important month. We’ll probably marry toward the end of the month, because her mom passed at the beginning of September. It’ll be sad, but then we can end the month on a happy note.

BMWK: Thank you both so much. I send thoughts, prayers and love your way. I hope this won’t be the last time we speak.

Brittany: Thank you. No, we will speak again.

This interview was my absolute favorite. This is an amazing couple who already have the perfect foundation for their marriage in place. Put God first. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

BMWK, please leave your well wishes, thoughts or prayers for this beautiful couple in the comment section below. They truly appreciate the love.
