Most of us have probably heard this phrase before, “And two shall become one…” Have you ever stopped to think what this phrase really means and where did it come from? What does it really mean to YOU? Is it based on your understanding of a biblical principle? Is it based on what you learned growing up or something that has been passed along from generation to generation in your family? What does it mean in your household, “And two shall become one.”?
I pose this question to have you think about what it means in your marriage. Only you have the answer. Whatever the answer, be sure to share it with your spouse. Come together and share with one another so that you are on one accord, bringing harmony within your relationship.
This little phrase comes directly from biblical scripture. It’s found in Mark 10:8 of the Bible. If you are a Bible believing person discover what it means in the context of scripture.
What’s valuable here, is that you and your spouse come into agreement as to what it means in your home. Here are some meanings I have encountered through the years. This is not to say that I agree or disagree with them. They are an example of the different understandings and patterns that exist.
1. Husband and wife don’t have anything as individuals. You have given up all independence.
2. Sexual intercourse.
3. You begin to think alike and should never disagree.
4. You put all your money together into one bank account.
5. My freedom is gone.
6. Perfectly united in mind and thought.
7. We share every aspect of our lives withholding nothing.
8. It’s the creation of an unbreakable union as two lives become one.
9. It’s the beginning of a covenant agreement.
