There is a reason why “debt” is a “four-letter” word. Debt is a curse and keeps you from living your life free of fear, worry, and frustration. The irony is that we run away from our financial problems because we want to avoid pain. Running away, however, only worsens the state of our finances, thus creating even more pain and financial issues.
Bottom line: we must confront our debt in order to control it and ultimately eliminate it. We must tackle our debt in order to feel and be grown. The reality is that you can’t kill your debt overnight nor do you need to in order to feel like you are making progress in your money world. Committing to financial freedom is a life-long journey, starting with tiny, baby steps.
BMWK Ladies – Take these five baby steps to increase your financial confidence. These steps will help you become debt-free before you know it. Are you handling your finances like a grown woman should? How are you eliminating debt in a systematic way?

Great article! I learned early on about debt. After moving out at 18, getting an apartment on my own, not paying my bills, getting evicted at 19, and damaging my credit, I realized how important it is to be responsible about my finances. You have to prioritize what’s a want and what’s a need. I could not get approved for ANYTHING when my credit was a hot mess 🙂 Once I restored my credit score years ago it feels good to have control and know where my money is being invested. I like nice things, but I don’t spend nice money for it. I love the rush of a bargain- Groupon has me on speed dial 🙂

Nice article. Yet, I have to say this. I understand the reason for maintaining debt free and a good credit report however there isn’t a one fits all reason. I am in debt currently not because I didn’t pay my bills, ignore them or ran up a lot of unnecessary purchases etc. I lost my job and every thing else went with it. Paying what I could yet still found myself in debt.
Thank you for the article, even if it ( and the title) is a touchy one at least for me, cause I am grown woman and I find myself in a position that I didn’t foresee and didn’t put myself in.
I will take what I can use and again, Nice article and useful.

This is a great plan but folks, don’t forget to GIVE first. I personally tithe. It’s hard for a closed fist to receive anything more and it’s biblical. God loves a cheerful giver, not out of necessity or compulsion.

For those who can – you also need an emergency fund. Start by trying to set up the 52 week savings plan to achieve this. You will save more than 1300 by the end of the 52 weeks…and you will only put away a maximum of $52 dollars in any given week.

Great article! As you age, you realize how silly it is to rack up debt for items you don’t need. Instilling paying in cash in kids at a very early age is a great tool, plus you can teach them how to save along the way. Practicing these things early on is key.
