How I Helped to Raise $1 Million For Breast Cancer

I helped raise almost 1 million dollars two weeks ago. I joined hundreds of other people in raising money for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk. Although I did not know the other people on the walk, we all had one thing in common. We knew that our efforts (no matter how large or small) combined with the efforts of hundreds of others, could make a huge impact in the fight against breast cancer.

My team’s name was Making a Difference. And the team was comprised of my friends, family, and my daughter’s Girl Scouts troop and their parents. I was so proud of our girl scouts that participated. They made signs in honor of breast cancer survivors and in memory of people that we have lost. While making the signs, the girls and I talked about the ways that they were empowered to make a difference in the community. One of the girls said: “It feels good to give back” as she was making a sign for the walk. I could tell that the girls enjoyed the walk and I am hoping that this experience inspired them to become leaders in their communities and to want to always look for ways that they can give back.

I would like to thank Hanes for sponsoring our team. Hanes provided t-shirts as well as snacks and other gifts for every member of the team. Over the last 3 years, Hanes has made cash and in-kind donations totaling more than $1 million dollars to breast cancer research. Not only does Hanes donate money, but they also continue to find ways to empower others to make a difference, like sponsoring teams such as mine that walk in Breast Cancer walks.

This year Hanes also launched a new Facebook application to share comfort with those who need it most. Fans of Hanes on Facebook can personalize and send free virtual Comfort Packages to friends and family via a digital tool on the Hanes Facebook page. Hanes created the Comfort Packages to bring a smile and help spread comfort to fans’ social networks in a small, but impactful, way.
