How to Begin to Let Go as a Mom

My first born is entering her senior year of high school next month and it’s got me feeling some kind of way. With all of the excitement that comes with that, also comes anxiety.

This young lady, who I literally remember every minute and detail about the day she entered this world 17 years ago, has plans, big plans for her life. As she begins to think about colleges, I start to focus on the future. I think about her on her own and while it freaks me out, I know I must prepare myself for being the parent of an adult. I admit I can be a smothering mom, very over protective.

My aha moment came as I watched her navigate through her college advisory meeting with confidence. I thought to myself, she’s got this. During that meeting, I realized this was the beginning of her travels into womanhood. As hard as it is, I have to prepare my mind and heart to release a little of the control I’ve had.

While we are raising our children, we know the day will come when they leave for college and begin their journey into the wonderful world of being an adult.  And I’m finding small ways to start the process of letting go.

I am so grateful I was chosen for this role. As difficult as it will be watching my daughter pack up and leave for school, I know the values I am teaching now will make it that much easier for both of us to let go.

BMWK, how are you preparing your child as well as yourself for their journey into adulthood?
