Is Marriage Outdated or Do We Need to Get Back to the Basics?

Based on what we hear and see in the media, you would think that marriage is obsolete! But we know differently! And we know that marriage is good for our children and our communities (better schools, less crime, and more home ownership…)

Last week during  #MarriageChat, our weekly Wednesday night twitter chat, we discussed the State of Marriage.  It was very interesting to hear different perspectives on how people view marriage and what we need to do to improve marriage in our communities.

We asked very  poignant  questions such as is marriage outdated, what led us to the current state of marriage, and what can married folks do to change the perception of marriage.

Check out the answers we received by clicking each page below.

Then leave a comment telling us what you think current state of marriage is and how we can turn things around.

What’s the current state of Marriage?

Most people agreed that marriage is in a bad state and that people don’t even know how to be married anymore.  People are shying away from marriage and choosing to have kids and/or live together without getting married.  But there were some that were optimistic about the new focus that is being placed on the benefits of healthy marriages for our communities.

What led us to this current state of marriage?

Are we living in a culture that loves the idea of “marriage” and the beautiful wedding day, but the people don’t know what it takes to be in a lasting marriage? People love to prepare for their wedding ..but what about preparing for the marriage?  And what about the influence that media has on marriage (always focusing on weddings, drama and divorce?)

What’s the difference between marriages now & marriagse 50 yrs ago? Did people stay married longer?

I think that most people would agree that there was some mess going on in marriages 50 years ago (just like today.)  But, divorce was not as accepted as it is today.  Do you agree?

What can we do to support the institution of marriage in our communities?

How can we begin to turn this around?

Who should be responsible for turning this marriage crisis around (government, churches, individuals?)

If we are going to turn this around, every one will need to take part in the solution.

Are marriage ideals such as head of household, submission, etc, outdated? Or do we need to get back to the basics?

Married folks can be the worse advertisers for marriage? What should we stop doing? What should we start doing?

We don’t have to be phony, but married folks should be cognizant of the example that they are setting.  We always say, you never know who is watching you and how you may impact their lives.  If you are happy, then say that you’re happy.  Because believe me, unhappy people are screaming it from the roof tops.  We need to show more positive images.
