Is the Presidential Election Causing You to Lose Friends?

It’s election season. And with the debates going on now, there is no shortage of things to talk about. Most people are watching the debates and posting their opinions directly on their Facebook pages. And who can resist re-posting some of the funny images that float around after a debate.  I mean this one of the Sesame Street Characters who  apparently are  angry at Mitt Romney’s promise to cut funding to PBS if he is elected  is hilarious!

But, people are noticing that they are causing arguments or losing friends in the process. CNN.Com ran an article on this very topic that stated:

“Nearly one-fifth of people admit to blocking, unfriending or hiding someone on social media over political postings, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. The biggest gripes: The offending person posted too often about politics, disagreed with others’ updates, or bothered mutual friends with partisan political postings.

“In the real world, we navigate these issues all the time. We know not to bring up politics around certain friends or family members. We try to avoid people who are constantly looking for an argument or trying to sell us on their pet ideas,” said Aaron Smith, a Pew research associate.”

If you visit our site frequently, then you know that we are fans of the President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama’s  marriage.  We love how they interact, how they keep each other and their kids as their focus, and how they support each other.  But now that the election season is underway, any mention of our President and First Lady is sure fire way to get us hateful comments and to lose us a few fans. Even a simple post about how we can learn from their marriage ruffles feathers.

Personally, I really don’t mind that people have differing views on politics.  But, it’s the hateful tones and language that give me pause.

BMWK – we want to hear from you. Do you discuss politics on your facebook page? Does it bother you when others do? Have you un-friended anyone because of their political views?
